Buses convey messages to protect wildlife

23/07/2021

Wildlife species disappear at a rate faster than the time it takes a Danish bus to pick up and drop off passengers.

In September 2020, WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) published a report on the rapid disappearance of animal species, 68% of the world's wildlife has disappeared since 1970.

The main reason for the sudden extinction happening globally is due to the increasingly brutal destruction of nature by humans: illegal hunting of wild animals, clearing of forest land causing loss of animal habitat, industrialization causing environmental pollution, the Earth getting hotter every day...

Bus advertising campaign warns of the rate at which wildlife is disappearing.

To raise awareness about the serious decline of wildlife, Pong, the creative agency of WWF in Denmark, launched a special advertising campaign, turning a bus into a "mobile forest" with orangutans, gorillas and tigers appearing next to the bus doors.

The uniqueness of the campaign lies in its simple yet clever presentation: When the doors open for passengers to get off the bus, the animals are hidden from view, and people will only see the message:Every time a car stops, another endangered species disappears..

The rate at which endangered species disappear is like the moment the bus doors open.

“Through this haunting warning, we want to raise awareness that animals on the planet are disappearing very quickly, and that each person should think about their own actions,” Pong Creative Director Mikkel Elung told Adweek.

The team found that, by their estimates, a species was disappearing in real time faster than a Danish bus could stop and drop off passengers. The agency wanted to illustrate that to the public, literally, through an outdoor advertising campaign that could impact people directly.

The three animals chosen for the campaign are gorillas, orangutans and tigers, because they are among the 15 most endangered animals on the planet, some of their particular species having seen their numbers decline dramatically in recent years due to deforestation, illegal hunting and habitat loss.

The buses, carrying the message, have been running around Denmark for three weeks. The campaign is supported by social activists and is accompanied by a fundraising event for WWF.
