A picturesque scene in Sicily
As soon as this news spread, it attracted significant attention, with many foreigners rushing to buy houses in Sicily. By the end of January 2020, approximately 10 vacant houses had been sold. According to reports, due to the alarming decline in the population of Sambuca, Sicily, in recent years, the local authorities decided to sell vacant houses in the town for 1 euro to attract residents.
However, buying a house for 1 euro there isn't actually that simple. Buyers must commit to the local authorities to carry out renovations 12 to 45 times over three years. In addition, buyers must also pay a deposit of up to 5,000 euros. This deposit is only refunded once the house has been renovated and looks newer and more beautiful.
Despite the rather strict conditions, within a few days of the news spreading, the local authorities had received nearly 40,000 emails, many houses had been sold, and the number was still increasing.
Buyers must commit to the local authorities to carry out house renovations between 12 and 45 times within a 3-year period.
