Mack Rutherford, a 16-year-old British-Belgian national, landed in Da Nang on July 19th as he embarked on his quest to break the record for the youngest pilot to fly solo around the world, according to an announcement from the British Embassy in Vietnam.
Rutherford piloted the Shark Aero, an extremely fast aircraft capable of reaching speeds of 300 km/h. The plane was meticulously prepared for long-distance flights.
Sixteen-year-old pilot Mack Rutherford made a stop in Da Nang on his round-the-world flight.
On the MackSolo website, Rutherford's team stated that the pilot enjoyed favorable weather and "stunning scenery" on his flight from Thailand to Vietnam. Rutherford also savored local delicacies during the journey.
Rutherford departed from Bulgaria in March, using a Sharky light aircraft to fly across Europe, Africa, and Asia, stopping in Kolkata, India, and Chiang Mai, Thailand, before arriving in Vietnam. Rutherford's next stop is the Philippines.
Mack Rutherford grew up in a family with a tradition of being pilots, possessing hundreds of hours of flight experience with his father, including two transatlantic voyages.
The aircraft used Mack Rutherford's ultralight aircraft.
Zara, Mack's older sister, also set a record earlier this year by becoming the youngest female pilot in the world to fly solo around the world at the age of 19.
Sharing on his personal website, Rutherford said he received his microplane pilot's license at the age of 15, making him the youngest pilot in the world. Rutherford shared that he wants to be the youngest person to fly solo around the world.
