In the plan submitted to the Government, Kien Giang province plans to establish Phu Quoc city, comprising 8 wards and one commune. After its establishment, Phu Quoc city will have a natural area of over 589 km2 and a population of 127,709 people. Phu Quoc city is located in the northwest, about 120km from Rach Gia city - the administrative center of Kien Giang province - and has two central urban areas: Duong Dong and An Thoi.
In recent years, Phu Quoc has experienced extremely strong tourism development.
The 2,518.9-hectare Duong Dong urban area has been designated as the central administrative and commercial hub of Phu Quoc Island. It is projected that by 2030, this urban area will have a population of 240,000 people, including approximately 183,000 migrants from the mainland and around 12,000 tourists.
The An Thoi urban area, covering 1,022 hectares, is envisioned to become an international port city, a technical hub and duty-free logistics center, as well as a commercial and tourism center. It will also include light industrial zones, a cultural center, and historical sites reflecting the long-standing traditions of the local people. It is projected that by 2030, the An Thoi urban area will have over 70,000 inhabitants.
Bai Truong is an area with many high-end hotels and resorts in Phu Quoc.
Phu Quoc's tourism has experienced incredibly rapid growth over the past 10 years. While in 2010 Phu Quoc only welcomed around 300,000 visitors, by 2015 the island had received approximately one million, and this number reached four million in 2019. Phu Quoc has become an extremely attractive destination for both domestic and international tourists, boasting over 22,000 accommodation rooms, more than half of which are 3-5 star standard. A highlight is the world-class resort and entertainment complexes invested in by major corporations.
