Domestic airlines' carry-on baggage regulations

12/03/2014

Each airline has different regulations regarding carry-on baggage. Understanding these regulations will help you avoid unnecessary problems.

Vietnam Airlines

Business class passengers are allowed two pieces of carry-on baggage, while economy class passengers are allowed one. Each piece of carry-on baggage must not exceed 7 kg in weight and have overall dimensions of 56 x 36 x 23 cm.

In addition to your main carry-on baggage, you may bring one of the following items on board:

- A handbag, a woman's purse, or a briefcase—these items must not be packed as separate pieces of luggage, otherwise they will be counted as one piece of baggage.

- A coat, blanket, or scarf.

- An umbrella or a walking stick (except for those with a pointed metal handle).

- A laptop, a small camera, or binoculars.

- A reasonable number of books and reading materials.

- Children's food for consumption on the airplane.

- Baby crib.

- Foldable hand trolley.

- A pair of wooden crutches, and prosthetic limbs.

- Items subject to transport restrictions

Jetstar Airlines

Each passenger (except infants) is allowed one large carry-on bag and one small carry-on bag with a total weight of 7 to 10 kg (depending on the type of ticket purchased). Passengers traveling with an infant may bring baby food on board. If a seat has been reserved for the infant, strollers are also permitted.

The maximum dimensions for large carry-on baggage are 23cm (height) + 36cm (width) + 56cm (length) for handbags or carry-on suitcases. For garment bags or duffel bags, the maximum dimensions when unfolded are 11cm (height) + 60cm (width) + 114cm (length).

Small luggage can include a small handbag, wallet, coat, umbrella, and shopping bags from airport duty-free shops (for international flights).

Vietjet Air

Each passenger (excluding infants) is allowed to carry one main piece of hand luggage and one small piece of hand luggage, with a total weight not exceeding 7 kg. The dimensions of the luggage are as follows:

- One main piece of carry-on baggage with maximum dimensions of 56cm x 36cm x 23cm

- 1 small carry-on bag (including: 1 women's handbag or books, magazines, camera, baby food bag, airport shopping bag... with dimensions not exceeding 30cm x 20cm x 10cm / 1 garment bag with maximum dimensions when unfolded not exceeding 114cm x 60cm x 11cm / 1 laptop bag with maximum dimensions of 40cm x 30cm x 10cm)

Besides the specific carry-on baggage regulations of each airline, there are general rules. For example, if your baggage is oversized, it may be refused transport, and you will have to check it in and pay a fee (with budget airlines or for excess baggage). Furthermore, when making connecting flights with different airlines, carry-on baggage regulations may vary. Therefore, you should check the carry-on baggage regulations of each carrier.

Items prohibited in carry-on baggage or on board include knives, sharp objects, cutting tools, and sewing needles. Matches, lighters, gas lighters of all types, and sporting goods are also prohibited. These items must be carefully packaged and placed in checked baggage. Government-mandated limits on the quantity of liquids, aerosols, and gels will be checked at security checkpoints at Vietnamese airports.
