The difference between wellness retreat and wellness tourism

The concept of wellness tourism has emerged in Vietnam recently, but there is no clear definition. Simply put, wellness retreat is a vacation that focuses on your health goals, including experiences of meditation, cycling, yoga... and being close to nature. Wellness tourism is a long-term trip, expanding the exploration of local culture, people, and nature, combined with more in-depth health treatments, thereby healing the damage.

As in healing trips, your time will be spent in a communal living area, supported by local people (who may be experts in the field of health and spirituality) and close to the local natural landscape. On the other hand, a medical tour will take you into a space with luxury services, access to health care activities guided by invited health experts. One style is to delve into the complexity and depth of culture and specialized health care therapies that take a long time to feel. The other is a short-term experience and exploration style that brings immediate health benefits and complete rest after a long period of work fatigue.

"At that time, I went on a tour that was not like healing tourism. There was no form of people letting me meditate or anything else. At that time, I did not like my job but did not know if I had enough courage to change jobs? There were many fears. But I decided to go far away, for a long time and then saw everything more clearly. After that trip, everything opened up new horizons... India is a place with a very good energy field, so I heard the bells there and felt that it was my first healing trip." - Travel blogger Tam Bui shared more about healing trips in Podcast Di-Dich episode 2: "Healing through trips".

Healing tourism or healing journeys will differ in terms of time and how the traveler experiences it, but understanding why you are doing it is extremely important. Life in the end, is probably just a long healing journey over many years. And each trip, you will be healed by new energies and stories.

"I travel mostly to understand the arts. Every time I go, I don't want to go to many places. I live with the village, work with them, meet with them. I see the depth of my people... When I come back, I see their cultural stories" - Musician Duc Thinh shares more about trips close to indigenous culture in this same program.
