October is enchanting with the buckwheat flower season.

30/09/2015

From the end of October to the first half of November each year is the season when buckwheat flowers, a characteristic flower of the Northeast highlands, bloom in vibrant colors.

Few places evoke as many emotions in visitors as the high mountains of Northeast Vietnam during the golden autumn. Majestic yet romantic, the autumn landscape of the Northeast is enchanting, with its endless stretches of pink and white blossoms covering the hills during the buckwheat flower season. The captivating beauty of this northernmost region of Vietnam awakens a sense of exhilaration in those accustomed to city life and stirs a longing in the hearts of those who love to conquer the wonders of nature.

That was the origin of the idea to organize the first festival celebrating a flower in Ha Giang, the "capital" of buckwheat. The 2015 Buckwheat Flower Festival will take place in four districts: Dong Van, Quan Ba, Yen Minh, and Meo Vac, from November 12th to 15th. This is the ideal time for tourists to admire the flowers and immerse themselves in attractive cultural activities at the festival, such as the Buckwheat Flower Wine Night, displays of buckwheat flowers and products made from buckwheat flowers, and a photo exhibition about the land of buckwheat flowers…

Buckwheat flowers are characteristic of the northern mountainous region, but only in Ha Giang are they grown most abundantly and beautifully. Emerging from rice and corn husks, the petals cluster together to form a cone shape, with three triangular sides holding the precious buckwheat seed in the center… Within a month, the flowers bloom white, then turn pale pink, then purple, and finally deep red. They grow profusely across the fields, sometimes perched precariously on terraces, sometimes hidden among rocks, and add charm to the porches of the highlanders' homes. These simple yet elegant flowers, with their white and pink hues, symbolize love and happiness, attracting many couples to take wedding photos.

After being captivated by the beauty of the buckwheat flower fields, visitors now have the opportunity to explore the unique cultural life of the ethnic minorities in the highlands. This includes a visit to the Vuong family's house – a mansion and fortress, solidly built with blue stone and samu wood in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; a stop in Pho Cao to visit the traditional Mong houses that are still relatively intact; and a visit to the famous Lung Tam linen weaving village of the White Mong ethnic group. Also interesting is a stroll along the romantic roads in Lung Cam Thuong village, chosen as the setting for the famous film "Pao's Story".

Those who love conquering majestic nature will be thrilled to set foot on Quan Ba Heaven's Gate, a place described as being able to "bow your head to touch the ground and reach out to touch the sky," shrouded in fog year-round. They will also be amazed by the Twin Fairy Mountains, with their soft, rounded, bowl-shaped forms – a masterpiece of nature that has inspired countless romantic legends. Visitors will then continue to conquer the majestic Ma Pi Leng Pass – one of the "Four Great Passes" of the northern mountainous region – and be astonished to set foot on the strangely shaped "rock gardens" and "rock forests" of cat's ear-shaped rocks, amidst the majestic and towering mountain ranges of the Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark. And they will feel immense pride reaching the Lung Cu flagpole – marking the northernmost point of the country…
