Germans protest against lockdown
Thousands of Germans continued to take to the streets in the capital Berlin and several major cities in Germany to protest against the social distancing measures still being applied in Germany to prevent the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to figures released by German police, the largest demonstration on the afternoon of May 9 took place in Stuttgart, the capital of Baden-Wurtemberg state in southwestern Germany, with about 3,000 people. In Munich, the capital of Bavaria state in the south, about 2,000-3,000 people also took to the streets to protest. Meanwhile, in the capital Berlin, the number of protesters was lower, only a few hundred people, gathered at Alexanderplatz square and in front of the German Federal Parliament building. Many clashes took place between protesters and police, forcing German police to arrest a number of extremists.
This is the fifth consecutive weekend that Germany has witnessed anti-lockdown protests, despite the fact that the German federal government and state governments have lifted many restrictions in the past few days. Currently, all stores in Germany have reopened, and professional football leagues will also start playing again next week, albeit without spectators. German authorities also allow protests to take place but must limit the number of participants, from 50-80 people depending on each state.
However, the protests show that Germans are starting to tire of staying at home for so long. According to a recent poll, although two-thirds of Germans still support social distancing measures, the number has dropped sharply from 92% just over a month ago.
This has caused concern among German health officials. On May 9, the German Federal Agency for Disease Control, the Robert Koch Institute, announced figures showing that the Sars-CoV-2 virus infection rate in Germany has increased again, to 1.1, while last week it was only 0.65-0.7. Notably, Germany has just discovered a number of new outbreaks, which are meat processing facilities in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
