With these 11 new locations, the world now has 111 global geoparks in 32 countries. The newly added sites are actually areas that have been known for many years, perhaps for their beautiful scenery or for attracting tourists.
Among the most notable geoparks recognized at this 6th Conference are Mount Aso in Japan; Mount Kunlun in China; and El Hierro Island in Spain. These parks are special not because their geological layers have a longer history than other locations, but because, in addition to their exceptional geological, geomorphological, and historical value, they are also famous tourist destinations, widely known throughout the world.
Specifically, the list of 11 new geoparks includes:
1. Mount Aso in Japan:
Aso is Japan's largest active volcano and one of the oldest in the world. Located in Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu, although it no longer erupts, white smoke continues to billow from its crater. This is what gives Aso its unique beauty and attracts many tourists. Visitors can climb to the summit and get close to the crater, but safety measures are in place to protect against gas leaks. To ensure safety, the Aso crater viewing area always displays information about gas levels and weather conditions. This information is shown using four different colored lights. A yellow light indicates bad weather and that the amount of gas escaping from the crater exceeds the permissible limit. In such cases, the crater area will be temporarily closed. Aso is one of Japan's most popular tourist destinations. Each year, this scenic spot welcomes approximately 2 million tourists from all over the world.

2. Kunlun Mountains in China
The Kunlun Mountains hold special significance in Chinese culture and history because, according to legend, they are a paradise for followers of Taoism. They are the dwelling place of the Queen Mother of the West, who presides over the Peach Banquet in the palace of the Jade Emperor. For thousands of years, up to modern times, there have been numerous legends, myths, and even novels about the supernatural and ghostly tales surrounding this mountain range. - See more at: http://cinet.gov.vn/ArticleDetail.aspx?articleid=21620&sitepageid=547#sthash.aIT9KJF8.dpuf
