For those who often travel independently and want to explore the real life and culture of a land, going around the city with a local tour guide will be an extremely valuable experience. Hong Kong Free Tour was born with such a purpose.
Hong Kong has always appeared splendid in the eyes of international tourists: skyscrapers, bustling streets, sparkling lights every night and people always bustling and busy. But there is also a very different Hong Kong, told by the people who were born and raised here: poor neighborhoods, old shops, social disparities and the divide between rich and poor... "The splendor and prosperity are not the full story of this city. I think it is important that we - the locals, want to be more honest about our city", Lau Lau - a local tour guide shared.

That is why Lau Lau and many other local tour guides are accompanying Hong Kong Free Tour. Started in August 2019, Hong Kong Free Tour was founded by Michael Tsang Chi-fai, who worked in the financial industry in the US and the Netherlands before quitting his job to return to Hong Kong and set up his own travel company.
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Tsang spent a long time abroad while studying at Berkeley University in the US. While living and working in Europe after graduating, Tsang often traveled to other countries every weekend and enjoyed joining free tours given by locals. “It was one of my best travel experiences and I want my city to be able to offer the same great experience. Let Hong Kong be told by Hong Kongers, not British or Chinese!” - Tsang shared.

And so, Tsang and Lau Lau take turns leading tourists on tours, sharing personal thoughts, stories and little-known authentic images of Hong Kong. In addition to explaining Hong Kong's heritage and the stories behind it, tourists also get to see makeshift homeless tents or hear about the world's most expensive housing costs. Instead of praising Michelin-starred restaurants or lavish shopping malls, Hong Kong Free Tour chooses to delve into the history and formation of the city and the hidden corners that exist here.
Homeless people in Hong Kong
The New York Times also commented on this special tour: “The good things are often shown, the city looks clean and modern - where you don't see homeless people. So we would be very grateful if they explained the real differences in society.”
There are many tours at different destinations and usually last from 3 to 6 hours, there are also tours up to half a day. On the principle of free, visitors when participating in the tour can donate any amount of money or a certain artifact or gift as desired.
Many travelers have experienced and left great comments on travel sharing sites.
