For those who frequently travel independently and wish to explore the authentic life and culture of a place, a city tour with a local guide is an invaluable experience. Hong Kong Free Tour was created with this purpose in mind.
Hong Kong has always appeared magnificent in the eyes of international tourists: skyscrapers, bustling streets, glittering lights at night, and a constant stream of busy people. But there is also a different Hong Kong, told through the eyes of those born and raised there: impoverished neighborhoods, old shops, social disparities, and the widening gap between rich and poor... "The splendor and prosperity are not the complete story of this city. I think what's important is that we – the locals – want to be more honest about our city," shared Lau Lau, a local tour guide.

That's why Lau Lau and many other local tour guides are partnering with Hong Kong Free Tour. Established in August 2019, Hong Kong Free Tour was founded by Michael Tsang Chi-fai, who previously worked in the US and Dutch finance industries before leaving to return to Hong Kong and start his own travel company.
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Tsang spent a considerable amount of time abroad while studying at the University of Berkeley in the United States. During his time living and working in Europe after graduation, Tsang frequently traveled to other countries on weekends and thoroughly enjoyed participating in free tours organized by locals. “It was one of the best travel experiences I’ve ever had, and I want my city to be able to offer this amazing experience as well. Let Hong Kong be told by Hong Kongers, not by British or Chinese people!” Tsang shared.

And so, Tsang and Lau Lau take turns leading tours, sharing their personal thoughts, stories, and little-known, authentic images of Hong Kong. Besides explaining Hong Kong's heritage and the stories behind it, tourists also witness the makeshift shelters of the homeless and learn about some of the world's most expensive housing costs. Instead of praising Michelin-starred restaurants or luxurious shopping malls, the Hong Kong Free Tour delves into the city's history and formation, along with its hidden corners.

The New York Times also lavished praise on this unique tour: “The good things are often showcased; the city looks so clean and modern—where you don’t see homeless people. So we would be very grateful if they could explain the real disparities in society.”
There are many tours at various destinations, usually lasting from 3 to 6 hours, although some tours can extend up to half a day. While free of charge, participants can donate any amount of money or a gift of their choice.
Many tourists have experienced it and left great reviews on travel sharing sites.
