Ho Chi Minh City will not be holding fireworks displays for the Lunar New Year 2022.

On the afternoon of January 13th, Mr. Vo Trong Nam, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports, announced that the city will not have fireworks displays to celebrate the Lunar New Year as in previous years.

At a press conference on COVID-19 prevention and control in Ho Chi Minh City, Mr. Nam stated that during the Lunar New Year holiday of 2022, there will be no large-scale fireworks displays like in previous years, and events involving large gatherings will be minimized. This decision was made by the city government in response to the complex developments of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly the rapid spread of the Omicron variant.

Mr. Vo Trong Nam announced the cancellation of the fireworks display for the 2022 Lunar New Year at a press conference on the afternoon of January 13th.

However, despite the cancellation of fireworks, regular activities to celebrate the Lunar New Year will continue, with all 18 events running from now until the end of February 2022. The content of these activities has been submitted by the Department of Culture and Sports to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, approved, and a final decision will be made in the coming days.

Specifically, Ho Chi Minh City will hold a spring exhibition, a meeting with consular delegations from various countries at the beginning of the Lunar New Year 2022, organize a spring flower festival and Tet flower market, activities expressing gratitude, a ceremony of offering incense and flowers to President Ho Chi Minh, the Lantern Festival, and other traditional cultural events on Nguyen Hue flower street, with the theme "Spring in the Homeland, Warmth of Compassion".

This year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, preparations are slower than in previous years; if everything went according to plan, it would have been completed by December 20th. As for fireworks to celebrate the Lunar New Year, in the spirit of joining the whole country in fighting the pandemic, Ho Chi Minh City will not have fireworks this year to avoid large gatherings of people,” Mr. Nam said.
