A 28-year-old Indian man attempted suicide by climbing over a fence and lying next to a lion at a zoo in New Delhi. Zoo staff had to sedate the large animal and safely remove the young man.

On October 17th, visitors at the New Delhi Zoo (India) were terrified when a young man jumped over the fence surrounding the lion enclosure and approached the ferocious animal to taunt it.

Chinmoy Biswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Southeast, said zoo staff subsequently sedate the lion and the young man was sent to a medical facility for examination. Fortunately, he was rescued in time and suffered no injuries.

The incident occurred around 12:30 PM local time on October 17th. The audacious young man, identified as Rehan Khan, 28, is from Bihar state (India). According to witnesses, he appeared intoxicated and mentally unstable. Later, in an interview, he shared that he had just been fired and no longer wanted to live.

"A lion of this size could kill a person in just 15 seconds," said Anish Andheria, an expert from the Wildlife Conservation Foundation of India.

In fact, the zoo's management staff are frequently criticized for lax security, especially in the areas surrounding the enclosures of large feline animals such as tigers, leopards, and lions.
