Turkey's national carrier, Turkish Airlines, has announced its next European direct flight from Istanbul to Palermo, the largest city on the Italian island of Sicily. Starting May 5, the 860-mile (1,384-kilometer) Istanbul-Palermo route will be operated on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Turkish Airlines will operate the route using the jumbo Boeing 737-800.

Palermo is located in southern Italy on the largest Mediterranean island of Sicily and is the capital of the autonomous region. The city is known for its mild Mediterranean climate, festivals, nightlife, historical and cultural buildings, and welcomes a large number of tourists year-round. According to booking data from Simpleflying, Palermo had around 60,000 round-trip passengers to Turkey, Asia, the Middle East, East and South Africa in 2019. Turkish Airlines ranked Palermo as its largest potential market, followed by Tokyo Narita, Wenzhou, Bangkok, Istanbul, Seoul, Hong Kong, Beirut, Beijing and Singapore.
