The beauty of monumental architecture in Yugoslavia

29/03/2021

Jonk - a French photographer - drove over 5,000 km across Southeastern Europe to take pictures of monuments in Yugoslavia - a historical site in Serbia.

Built in the 1960s and 1970s under former president Josep Broz Tito, these monuments commemorate the Communist Party's resistance during the German occupation.

The monuments were designed by sculptors and architects: Vojin Bakic, Jordan and Iskra Grabul… But all of them were built to commemorate battles of World War II or former concentration camps.

Although the sites attracted a high number of visitors in the 1980s, many were abandoned or fell into poor condition after the breakup of Yugoslavia. Jonk’s photographs show both the decay and the beauty of these sculptures.
