When traveling abroad, many tourists are no longer interested in the familiar destinations mentioned in every guidebook or postcard. Instead, they tend to seek out new, lesser-known places, hoping for a different, more unique experience. However, not every place can meet those expectations. Some places, whether famous or newly discovered, disappoint visitors due to overcrowding, poor service, or simply... nothing special.
To give travelers a more realistic perspective, the luggage storage platform Radical Storage conducted a large-scale survey, analyzing over 95,000 online reviews of 200 popular tourist destinations worldwide. From this, they compiled a list of destinations with the highest negative reviews – places many people once dreamed of visiting, only to leave with regret.
1. Alton Towers, United Kingdom - 49.4% negative reviews
Leading the list is Alton Towers amusement park in Staffordshire, England. Once an aristocratic estate in the 19th century, it was later opened to the public and developed into an amusement park in the 1980s, inspired by Disneyland in the United States.
Currently, Alton Towers is the largest theme park in the UK, spanning 910 acres and featuring 10 different themed areas. However, nearly half of the reviews (49.4%) the park receives are negative – almost five times higher than the average of 10.9% in the study.
The main reasons lie in customer service and additional costs. As many as 18% of reviews mentioned "not worth the money"—the highest percentage in the entire survey. Many travelers reported misunderstandings about ticket policies, having to pay extra for ancillary services such as food, drinks, or access to restricted areas, making the experience unpleasant and lacking transparency.

2. Széchenyi Hot Springs, Hungary - 37.2% negative reviews
A renowned wellness destination in Europe, the Széchenyi hot springs in Budapest, Hungary, are the largest thermal baths in Europe and have been welcoming visitors since 1913. However, more than a third (37.2%) of reviews indicate that the experience there did not live up to expectations.
The main reason isn't the water quality or facilities, but rather overcrowding and inaccessibility. This hot spring resort ranks third on the list of places most complained about for overcrowding and accessibility, with 16.8% negative reviews in this category, compared to an average of only 4.4%. Visitors are advised that if they want to fully enjoy the relaxing atmosphere, they should visit during less busy times of the year.

3. Siam Park Water Park, Spain - 31.2% negative reviews
Siam Park on the island of Tenerife (Spain) is widely praised as the "best water park in the world" and a must-visit destination for water enthusiasts. The park, featuring Thai architectural style, opened in 2007 with the presence of Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand, and is currently preparing for expansion in Gran Canaria.
However, its impressive title didn't save Siam Park from criticism. Approximately 31.2% of reviewers left negative comments, with many complaining about unfriendly staff, unprofessional organization, and accessibility issues, particularly for people with disabilities. Some even mentioned being judged by staff on their appearance or weight – making the experience feel disrespectful and unfriendly.

4. Time Out Market Lisbon, Portugal - 28.4% negative reviews
Time Out Market Lisboa – a food court founded by Time Out magazine – is one of the standout culinary destinations in Lisbon. Opened in 2014, it won the Hamburg Foodservice Award in 2018, a testament to the success of its media-food model.
However, after nearly a decade of operation, Time Out Market Lisboa is gradually becoming a "victim of popularity." With 28.4% negative reviews, many people believe the food court is overcrowded and no longer maintains its original quality. Statistics also show that this location has the highest percentage of complaints about overcrowding and inaccessibility in the survey (18.4%).
Many tourists have to queue for long periods to buy food, while the dining spaces are cramped, failing to ensure a comfortable dining experience – especially for those expecting a leisurely meal while exploring the local food culture.

5. Trevi Fountain, Italy - 24.6% negative reviews
The Fontana di Trevi – Rome's iconic fountain – is well-known to international tourists through classic films such as La Dolce Vita and Roman Holiday. Traditionally, anyone who throws a coin into this fountain will have the chance to return to Rome.
However, popularity has also led to overcrowding, congestion, and a loss of the sacred and romantic atmosphere it once had. As many as 24.6% of visitors left negative feedback, with the majority related to the inability to access the attraction due to overcrowding (16.9%) – ranking second overall in the survey. Furthermore, the site was closed for renovations in 2024, leaving many visitors disappointed that they couldn't see it firsthand.
A popular alternative is Palatine Hill, which not only offers beautiful views and numerous historical sites but also boasts a significantly lower complaint rate (only 6.2%).
