With a total of 9 million international visitors staying each year, Hanoi ranks 15th and Ho Chi Minh City ranks 18th in the list of cities that attract the most international tourists in the Asia-Pacific region. According to statistics, the average daily spending of tourists in Hanoi is 78 USD (about 1.8 million VND) and in Ho Chi Minh City is 98 USD (about 2.2 million VND).

Mastercard also listed the top five international tourist destinations in Asia: Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo and Seoul. Fueled by the rapid growth of outbound tourism in China, these five cities account for 25.2% of total international tourism spending in the region.

“While the world’s economic, geopolitical, technological and social landscape has changed significantly since Mastercard launched this study 10 years ago, one thing remains the same: the number of people who want to explore this vast world continues to grow,” said Rupert Naylor, Vice President, Data and Services, Asia Pacific.

With 20 cities attracting nearly half (49.8%) of international tourists in the world’s 161 tourist destinations (in the APDI rankings), we need to understand that large numbers of tourists will have a positive impact on cities and tourist destinations, but at the same time they will cause many disadvantages. Therefore, governments, businesses and the global tourism industry need to equip themselves with information and understanding to better serve residents and tourists.”
