With a total of 9 million international visitors staying each year, Hanoi ranks 15th and Ho Chi Minh City ranks 18th in the ranking of cities attracting the most international tourists in the Asia-Pacific region. According to statistics, the average daily spending of tourists in Hanoi is $78 (approximately 1.8 million VND) and in Ho Chi Minh City is $98 (approximately 2.2 million VND).

Mastercard also listed the top five most visited international tourist destinations in Asia: Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, and Seoul. Driven by the phenomenal growth of outbound tourism in China, these five cities account for 25.2% of total international tourism spending in the region.

Rupert Naylor, Vice President of Data and Services for Asia Pacific, said: “While the world’s economic, geopolitical, technological and social landscape has changed significantly since Mastercard released this research 10 years ago, one thing has remained constant: the number of people wanting to explore the wider world continues to grow.”

With 20 cities attracting nearly half (49.8%) of international tourists among 161 tourist destinations worldwide (in the APDI ranking), we need to understand that while large numbers of tourists will positively impact cities and tourist destinations, they will also create many problems. Therefore, governments, businesses, and the global tourism industry need to equip themselves with the information and understanding to better serve residents and tourists.”
