International Living has just released its 2022 Global Retirement Index, in which Vietnam ranks 18th among the top 20 best countries for retirement in the world, with a score of 68.3.

Experts from International Living visited various countries to investigate the monthly expenses of a retiree, down to the smallest detail like liters of milk, bottles of beer, or movie tickets. Vietnam was highly rated for its quality of life at a very reasonable cost. In the 2022 Global Retirement Index, Vietnam ranked highest in the "Cost of Living" category with a score of 96/100, the highest in the world.

According to this organization, Vietnam has friendly locals, stunning scenery, a unique culture, and a high-quality lifestyle at an incredibly low cost. A foreign couple can live in a modern, fully furnished apartment in a good area, frequently dine out, enjoy many trips, and more, all on a budget rarely exceeding $1,500 per month.

International Living considers entertainment services in Vietnam to be a "bargain" for foreigners: “Watch the latest Hollywood blockbuster at the cinema for $4, or visit a fantastic museum for just $2 or $3. Gyms also offer many promotions if you buy an annual membership, averaging only about $25/month.”

Wendy Justice, Southeast Asia specialist at International Living, said: "I usually buy my fruit, vegetables, and meat at the local traditional market. At the large supermarkets that are available in every city across the country, the prices of these items are a bit higher."

Furthermore, Vietnamese cuisine is considered among the freshest and healthiest in the world, which is also a strong attraction for tourists. "A bowl of famous Vietnamese pho or a banh mi sandwich with meat, egg, pate, vegetables… costs an average of only about $1.50," the expert added.

In December 2021, Phu Quoc Island (Kien Giang, Vietnam) was also voted by International Living as one of the top 15 best islands in the world for retirement. "Phu Quoc Island is a fantastic destination for retirees and adventure seekers. Parks and reserves occupy a large portion of the island, along with more than 20 beaches scattered throughout... Phu Quoc has everything a holiday paradise needs; with the natural beauty of mountains, jungle trails, coral reefs and breathtaking beaches," - International Living described.
