Know these 6 rules of etiquette in Japanese bars.

"When in Rome, do as the Romans do" - there are certain rules and customs in each country's culture that you should understand before you arrive. Especially in Japanese bars, bartenders expect visitors to understand some of their working methods and the culture of the establishment to avoid any unwanted incidents during their stay.

1. Do not talk to other guests.

One of the most serious and common mistakes—according to a bartender—is that customers often start a conversation with another customer. In this situation, an experienced bartender will smooth things over by choosing one of the two customers to engage in conversation with, preventing the other customer from feeling bothered.

It looks like a place where people are sociable, but in reality, everyone who comes here just wants privacy.

2. Acknowledge the bartender.

Always smile and greet bartenders politely, especially when you choose to sit at the bar or interact with them. In Japan, bartenders are not just drink makers or servers; they are also like close friends to the customers, there to chat and socialize. Therefore, don't ignore them or treat them like "superiors" when you're with bartenders behind the counter.

3. Sit in the assigned seat.

You might prefer sitting at the counter or in a corner, but sometimes it's not up to you but rather the bartender or staff to decide – especially if you arrive randomly. Large groups are not allowed to sit at the counter because it creates a chain reaction of noise (instead of sitting in a circle) that disrupts the bartender. Many bars also don't welcome newcomers to sit at the main bar.

4. Discuss the drinks you ordered.

By all means, always order your drink by its exact name as it's listed on the menu. However, if it's not on the menu, the bartender certainly won't know it, and in this case, it's best to discuss the drink you want, describe it, and exchange ideas with the bartender. This allows both sides to broaden their knowledge and open up to each other about the world of alcoholic beverages.

5. Do not smoke cigars.

No bartender will mention this, but it's an unwritten rule in Japanese pubs. A cigar might pair well with your cognac, but it might not be suitable for someone else's gin. Understanding this is important to ensure a comfortable drinking experience for everyone. Avoid letting smoke or food odors disturb others.

6. Don't get drunk.

This certainly shouldn't happen in any bar, not just in Japan. You should sip your alcoholic drinks in moderation, not get completely drunk, as this is a place for refined and civilized drinking. Furthermore, no bartender will be impressed or want to serve you again if you behave like that.
