Andes Patagonia – a paradise waiting to be conquered

12/03/2018

The Andes Mountains stretch across Patagonia like a fortress wall. Here, you can experience the harshness of the mountains, unexplored valleys, and peaks without summits. Therefore, the stunning Patagonian Andes are known as a paradise for young mountaineers.

Surrounded by legends, solitude, tranquility, and mystery, the mountains, rivers, and valleys of Patagonia – “the land at the end of the earth” – are considered one of the most exquisite tourist destinations in the world.

Located in southern Chile, the Patagonia region is a little-known tourist paradise with some of the most beautiful and enchanting forests, bays, caves, glaciers, and hot springs on Earth.

Patagonia is the southernmost region of the Americas. Discovered by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and named after the tribe that inhabited it in the 16th century, Patagonia today belongs to both Chile and Argentina. It is considered the end of the world because, geographically, it is closer to the South Pole than any other country (approximately 1000 km).

Patagonia is also considered a paradise for mountaineers. This vast region in South America is home to some of the planet's highest mountains and extreme weather conditions. With its ancient granite peaks, conquering the Patagonian mountains is a coveted dream for climbers. With its glaciers, high-altitude lakes, and lush green forests, Patagonia is an incredibly unique and captivating destination. Here, exciting and adventurous journeys await those who love to conquer. Conquering Patagonia is like conquering yourself, a great adventure that demands patience, preparation, experience, and time.

Stretching across Patagonia like a wall from Bariloche to El Chaltesn in Argentina and Coyhaique to Torres del Paine in Chile, the Patagoinian Andes are a treasure trove for mountaineers seeking peace, solitude, and adventure.

Mountaineer Javiver Reyes Jerez has spent six summers in Torres del Paine. He said: “Patagonia is an adventurous terrain with giant walls of unique and rugged mountain ranges. We will conquer and explore this place step by step.”

Horacio Gratton, 41, explores the famous peaks he conquered in Pueblo when he was 18. He said, "Here, you can experience the harshness of the mountains, there are unexplored valleys and mountains without peaks."

In Patagonia, it's easy to find yourself hiking alone. Zehren says, "I think if you go alone in other places, you'll struggle in the wilderness. But in Patagonia, if you want to, you can be completely alone!"

Patagonia has a unique weather system, with frequent rain, wind, and gusts, and when it does shine, it often evokes strong emotions in people. Patagonia is nature in its purest state, Gratton says, a wild and challenging environment, with relentless winds, undulating snow-capped mountains, and forests merging into a vast desert with the ocean.

When the wind shifts from west to east, the Andes become a challenging obstacle. Mountaineer Zehren says that even in good weather, you'll still face many challenges; climbing can be relaxing, but here, you'll learn countless lessons. Don't be afraid, don't give up, despite the wind, rain, snow, cold, and danger, happiness will always be present because of the beauty of Patagonia and the mysteries of the mountains.

According to Gratton: “For me, the mountains of Patagonia are unbeatable, the towering peaks, with their rich natural environment, massive glaciers, primeval forests, vast deserts, the Patagonian coast with penguins and whales, the hospitable people in the towns, all make Patagonia an amazing destination. Conquering Patagonia doesn't mean conquering a specific mountain, but conquering yourself!”
