The helmet and armor set, manufactured in Milan (Italy) between 1560 and 1580, was donated to the Louvre Museum by the Rothschild family in 1922.

They mysteriously disappeared from the museum on May 31, 1983. Philippe Malgouyres, curator of artistic heritage at the Louvre Museum, stated: "These were valuable weapons, crafted with exquisite skill. In the 16th century, weapons were considered luxurious works of art. Armor was seen as a decorative item."

According to a statement from the museum management, an expert on ancient weapons reported the artifact to the police after he was invited to a family in Bordeaux in January 2021 to advise on inheritance matters.
