Recently, leaders of Phu Quoc city (Kien Giang province) announced that the Department of Transport and related units have reported and submitted a plan to put the Phu Quoc International Passenger Port into operation, expected in mid-February 2025.
To ensure the smooth and efficient operation of Phu Quoc International Passenger Port, the People's Committee of the city has been implementing numerous preparatory activities. Specifically, a detailed plan will be developed, clearly assigning tasks to each unit and specialized department. In addition, relevant agencies will coordinate closely to ensure full compliance with maritime safety regulations, creating favorable conditions for ships to dock and for tourists.
The Phu Quoc International Passenger Port project is invested by the Kien Giang Department of Transport, with a budget of over 1,664 billion VND.
The project is in its final stages, completing several remaining items such as the architectural design of the terminal and other auxiliary facilities. Mr. Le Quoc Anh, Secretary of the Phu Quoc City Party Committee, stated that the International Passenger Port is a project that the people of Kien Giang province in general, and Phu Quoc in particular, have been eagerly awaiting for a long time.
The commissioning of Phu Quoc International Passenger Port is not merely a transportation project but also marks a significant turning point in the island's socio-economic development strategy. This presents a golden opportunity for Phu Quoc to transform itself into an international maritime tourism hub, attracting visitors from around the world. With its favorable geographical location and modern port system, Phu Quoc will become an attractive destination for sea tourism routes, contributing to the diversification of tourism products and enhancing the island's position on the world tourism map.
According to the design, the port is capable of receiving international passenger ships with a capacity of 5,000-6,000 passengers.
The Phu Quoc International Passenger Port project commenced construction in 2015 (project implementation period from 2015-2025). The project covers an area of 180 hectares (including a 2.8-hectare terminal) with an initial investment of 1,644 billion VND and a breakwater length of 800 meters.
The AIDA Stella cruise ship off the coast of Phu Quoc in December 2024 brought approximately 2,000 tourists to visit the pearl island.
Phu Quoc International Passenger Port can accommodate cargo ships up to 15,000 tons and international passenger ships with a capacity of 5,000 to 6,000 passengers. Notably, it will also be the first multi-functional international passenger port in Vietnam meeting international standards.
Once officially operational, this passenger port will be a driving force for connecting with Phu Quoc International Airport, thereby contributing to the formation of a complete transportation infrastructure system with regional and international connectivity.
At the time of its inauguration, approximately two international cruise ships had registered to visit Phu Quoc. AIDA Stella was scheduled to dock on February 14th, while Costa Serena would visit the island three times (February 16th, 17th, and 20th). These are two luxury ships that regularly visit the island and other destinations in Vietnam such as Nha Trang, Cam Ranh (Khanh Hoa), and Ha Long (Quang Ninh).
