Switzerland recently attracted attention when it officially put into operation the world's steepest cable car line, an engineering wonder located in the middle of the Bernese Alps, according to Interesting Engineering. The design engineers said that this is the steepest cable car line in the world, with an incredible gradient of 159.4%, connecting the village of Stechelberg in the valley with the mountain village of Mürren.
The newly unveiled wonder is part of the Schilthornbahn 20XX project, which aims to dramatically reduce travel times to one of Switzerland's most iconic peaks. When the entire project is complete, travel times will drop from 32 minutes to just 18 minutes.
Feeling like you are flying in the air, seeing the majestic Alps will definitely be an unforgettable experience.
The cable car has 2 cabins, each cabin can accommodate up to 85 passengers, suspended on a horizontal support bar, connecting the cabin to the 11m long main cable, ensuring absolute safety on high mountain terrain and steep slopes. In addition, the cable car's operating system is modernly designed without the need for staff on duty in the cabin, but relies on an advanced camera and sensor system to monitor and ensure continuous safety.
In addition, a new cable car line connecting Mürren and Birg was also inaugurated on the same day, while the final section from Birg to the top of Schilthorn is expected to be operational in March 2025, with the entire project due to be completed by summer 2026.
In just 4 short minutes, visitors will be taken from the beautiful village of Stechelberg to the romantic village of Mürren on the top of the mountain.
Schilthorn, the setting of the classic James Bond film, has long been a dream destination for many tourists around the world. The launch of a new, modern and impressive cable car promises to take tourism in this area to a new level. Stechelberg and Mürren, two peaceful villages, will now become vibrant destinations, attracting millions of visitors each year.

This event not only creates opportunities for the tourism industry to develop but also contributes to promoting the local economy, creating many new jobs. With the new cable car line, Schilthorn is not only a tourist destination but also becomes a new symbol of Swiss tourism. The convenient connection between Stechelberg and Mürren will create a perfect travel itinerary, meeting the needs of all visitors, from adventure lovers to those who want to find peace.
The world's steepest cable car is not only an impressive engineering feat but also a new impetus for Swiss tourism.
