Check in at the newly popular "golden leaf road" in Hanoi.

11/03/2022

For about a week now, along the road stretching along the To Lich River (Cau Giay District, Hanoi), the small-leaved Terminalia trees have entered their leaf-changing season. The small street corner is ablaze with yellow, attracting many people to take photos and admire the scenery amidst the cool weather.

The Terminalia catappa trees begin shedding their leaves around the beginning of March, filling many streets in Hanoi with a golden hue. The most sought-after spot this past week was along the To Lich River, where a carpet of golden leaves covered the walkways along the Ring Road 2.

The section of Ring Road 2 leading to the elevated highway (Lang - Cau Giay - Buoi intersection) currently has three rows of small-leaved Terminalia trees that have all simultaneously turned yellow. These small-leaved Terminalia, also known as Taiwanese Terminalia, are medium-sized woody trees with light brown bark. This type of tree was only planted here a few years ago to replace the red maple trees.

The small-leaved Terminalia has a moderately wide canopy with short, upward-sloping branches. Its fallen leaves also cause less pollution and less impact on traffic compared to the common Terminalia.

Images of the romantic, "movie-like" golden-leafed road along the To Lich River have been widely shared on social media, attracting many people, especially young people, to check in. Many people expressed surprise that the road they usually just want to pass quickly due to traffic congestion and pollution from the To Lich River has suddenly been completely transformed.

Many young people, even those living far away, still take the time to come here to take photos and capture moments with their friends. Some people passing by on their way to work or school also stop their vehicles because they don't want to miss the romantic scenery on this road.

For the first day or two, before it was widely shared on social media, the deserted road gave a feeling of tranquility and peace. However, just a few days later, the number of people coming here started to increase, with crowds of people coming and going from morning to evening. This made taking photos more difficult; many people who came here hoping to get a beautiful photo felt a little disappointed, because despite their best efforts, they couldn't get a satisfactory picture.

Besides Buoi Street, small-leaved Terminalia trees are also planted on streets such as Tran Duy Huong, Kim Ma, Hoang Quoc Viet, etc. Photo: ANTĐ

The "Golden Leaf Path" along the To Lich River offers a fascinating new perspective for Hanoi residents – who have long held little affection for the name "To Lich River". Under the cool weather, this is also a rare moment that allows many to feel like they are enjoying an early autumn in Hanoi.
