Most recently, the team released a teaser poster and teaser trailer, further revealing the epic and brutal setting of the Cu Chi Tunnels. The film is scheduled to be released on April 4, 2025.
Through "Tunnels: The Sun in the Darkness," director Bui Thac Chuyen, along with actors Thai Hoa, Quang Tuan, Ho Thu Anh, and others, will recreate on screen the resilience and indomitable spirit of the soldiers and people of the heroic Cu Chi region, bringing viewers moving scenes of camaraderie and the determined spirit of the guerrilla fighters in holding their ground.
"The Tunnels: The Sun in the Darkness" is set against the backdrop of the 1967 Cedar Falls operation, which burned down many forests in Cu Chi. A 21-man guerrilla unit led by Bay Theo (played by actor Thai Hoa) at the Binh An Dong base became the number one target of the American army. In this tunnel system, Bay Theo's unit was tasked with protecting a medical supply depot and a field hospital. The soldiers had shed countless blood to transport the medical equipment to the tunnels. Therefore, his unit was even more determined to hold their ground to the end.
The film depicts the ferocity of the battle fought by the soldiers of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam to defend their crucial positions.
The teaser trailer opens with the sweet voice of Ut Kho (played by actress Hang Lamoon). With a bright smile and hopeful eyes, Ut Kho is a petite but strong guerrilla fighter, emotional and passionate about singing. Despite facing difficulties and dangers, Ut Kho is a source of encouragement for her comrades.
Recreating the Cu Chi Tunnels on the big screen was no small challenge. Building a confined, damp, and cramped tunnel system while simultaneously recreating the fierce battles fought above ground was a major undertaking. However, with dedication and relentless effort, the team created vivid and realistic footage, capturing every detail authentically.
The film is set in 1967, when the Vietnam War was entering its most intense phase.
The opening scenes of "Tunnels: The Sun in the Darkness" transported viewers to a mysterious and dangerous underground tunnel system. Images of dark, damp chambers and narrow passageways created a breathtakingly realistic atmosphere. Viewers felt as if they were immersed in the lives of the soldiers, experiencing their hardships and difficulties alongside them.
The more the enemy advanced, the more resilient and determined the soldiers here became in their fight. Even though Ba Huong (played by actress Ho Thu Anh) was exhausted from enduring each offensive, and Tu Dap (played by actor Quang Tuan) had to directly race against the enemy's gunfire, they remained determined to "fight the Americans to the end."
The film intertwines stories of camaraderie, love, and the will to live among soldiers, but above all, it highlights their duty and sacrifice for their country.
Director Bui Thac Chuyen shared that the stories recounted by the veterans touched his heart. These weren't just stories of fierce battles, but also tales of deep camaraderie and intense love for their homeland. It was these stories that inspired him to tell the most authentic account of the lives and struggles of the soldiers, so that today's younger generation could better understand the value of peace.
Unlike many other war films, "Tunnels: The Sun in the Darkness" not only focuses on fierce battles but also delves deep into the psychology of the soldiers. Director Bui Thac Chuyen wants to show the audience how ordinary people become extraordinary in the context of war, and how they lived and fought in harsh conditions.
