Most recently, the crew released a teaser poster and teaser trailer, continuing to reveal the majestic and fierce setting of the Cu Chi tunnels. The film is scheduled to be released on April 4, 2025.
Through “Tunnels: Sun in the Dark”, director Bui Thac Chuyen and actors Thai Hoa, Quang Tuan, Ho Thu Anh… will recreate on screen the resilience and indomitability of the army and people of the once heroic land of Cu Chi, bringing to the audience touching footage of comradeship and the determination of the guerrilla fighters to maintain their positions.
“Tunnels: Sun in the Dark” is set during the Cedar Falls raid in 1967, which burned down many forests in Cu Chi. The 21-man guerrilla team led by Bay Theo (played by actor Thai Hoa) at Binh An Dong base became the number 1 target of the US army. In this tunnel, the superiors assigned Bay Theo’s team the task of protecting the medicine box and the field hospital. To transport medical equipment to the tunnel, the soldiers shed countless blood. Therefore, his team was even more determined to hold the position until the end.
The film shows the fierce battle to maintain the important position of the soldiers of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam.
The teaser trailer opens with the sweet voice of Ut Kho (played by actress Hang Lamoon). Possessing a bright smile and hopeful eyes, Ut Kho is a small but strong guerrilla, emotional and loves to sing. Despite facing difficulties and dangers, Ut Kho is a source of encouragement for her teammates.
Recreating the Cu Chi tunnels on the big screen was no small challenge. Building a closed, damp and narrow tunnel space, while simulating fierce battles on the ground was a big challenge. However, with dedication and constant effort, the crew created vivid footage, true to every detail.
The film is set in 1967 when the Vietnam War entered its most intense phase.
The first footage of "Tunnels: Sun in the Dark" brought the audience to a mysterious and dangerous underground space. Images of dark, damp basements and narrow tunnels created a breathtakingly realistic feeling. The audience seemed to be immersed in the lives of the soldiers, experiencing difficulties and hardships with them.
The more the enemy advanced, the more persistent and determined the soldiers here became to fight. Even though Ba Huong (played by actress Ho Thu Anh) was exhausted after each sweep, and Tu Dap (played by actor Quang Tuan) had to directly race against bullets, they were still determined to "fight the Americans to the end".
The film is a story interwoven between comradeship, love and desire to live of soldiers, but above all is duty and sacrifice for the Fatherland.
Director Bui Thac Chuyen shared that the stories told by the veterans touched his heart. They were not only about fierce battles, but also stories about deep camaraderie and intense love for the homeland. It was those stories that inspired him to want to tell the most authentic story about the lives and battles of the soldiers, so that today's young generation can better understand the value of peace.
Unlike many other war films, "Tunnels: Sun in the Dark" not only focuses on fierce battles but also delves into the psychology of soldiers. Director Bui Thac Chuyen wants to show the audience how ordinary people become extraordinary in wartime, how they lived and fought harshly.
