In early 2021, the New York Times published its list of 52 destinations for 2021 after selecting and consulting with readers from over 2,000 different suggestions. Of the 52 names, only two were from Southeast Asia: Con Dao Island, Vietnam (ranked 46th) and Tagaytay, Philippines (ranked 42nd).

According to a new survey from Superdry, Vietnam ranks 6th among 25 countries and territories with the most-viewed travel videos on TikTok in 2021. Ho Chi Minh City also made it into the top 5 most-viewed cities, with 32.6 million views, just about 5 million views behind Jakarta (Indonesia), which ranked 4th, and surpassing other popular destinations such as Paris (France) and Tokyo (Japan).
