This batch of vaccines is a further contribution from Germany to support Vietnam's vaccination program. The German government said it would provide more vaccines to Vietnam, with a total expected of up to 10 million doses.
German Ambassador to Vietnam, Dr. Guido Hildner, said: “The pandemic is still a long way off. Germany will continue to provide vaccines to Vietnam through the international vaccine mechanism COVAX. We can only defeat the pandemic if it is controlled everywhere. That is why Germany and the European Union support the COVAX vaccination program to ensure equitable and transparent access to Covid-19 vaccines around the world.”
German Ambassador Guido Hildner (far left) attended the handover ceremony of 2,588,000 doses of Moderna vaccine supported by the German Government to the Vietnamese Government through the COVAX Facility.
Ms. Rana Flowers, Acting United Nations Coordinator and UNICEF Representative in Viet Nam, expressed her gratitude to the German Government and people for sharing vaccines with the people of Viet Nam. “We want to ensure that vaccines are distributed equitably to every region of this country and the world. Governments that have and will continue to support COVAX, including financial support and vaccine donations, are a driving force in the fight against the spread of this pandemic,” Ms. Flowers said.
Thus, with this batch of vaccines donated by the German Government, Vietnam has so far received a total of 45,197,910 doses of Covid-19 vaccine through the international vaccine mechanism COVAX.
The COVAX facility is jointly managed by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness and Innovations (CEPI), the Vaccine Alliance GAVI and UNICEF. Last year, Germany co-founded the Access to Covid-19 Tools Accelerator and, with a contribution of 2.2 billion euros, is the second-largest donor to the program.
