Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, and many other major cities across the archipelago are experiencing a period of serious unrest. This situation has forced foreign embassies to issue urgent warnings, advising their citizens to exercise extreme caution when traveling to and from Indonesia.

Given the complex security situation, many countries have acted swiftly to protect their citizens. The Australian Embassy in Jakarta issued a serious warning on August 30th, emphasizing that protests taking place across major Indonesian cities, including the popular tourist capital Bali, could escalate into violence and lead to significant property damage. Australian citizens were advised to closely monitor local media, stay away from protest sites, and be prepared for possible traffic restrictions.

Several embassies have issued travel warnings to their citizens traveling to Indonesia, due to nationwide protests turning violent and widespread looting.

Similarly, the US Embassy in Jakarta warned about protests taking place near the Parliament House and the Presidential Palace, areas with a high risk of violence. Jakarta authorities have closed several central areas and restricted traffic to ensure security. The advice for US citizens is to stay away from crowds, maintain contact with family, and pay particular attention to security in tourist areas.

The Singapore and British embassies have also issued similar advisories. The Singapore embassy urged its citizens to stay away from anti-government protests and large gatherings, to follow local authorities' instructions, and encouraged them to register with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' online service for timely assistance. The British embassy stressed that recent protests have led to violent clashes and casualties, advising citizens to absolutely avoid all political demonstrations, marches, or rallies as they could turn violent without warning.

Critics argue that the subsidies are too high at a time when most people are struggling due to high taxes, rising living costs, and increasing unemployment.

These warnings are not merely routine travel advisories but reflect the severity of the situation. The unrest has spread to 32 out of 38 provinces and municipalities, with at least 10 deaths, over 700 injuries, and approximately 1,200 arrests following a week of violence. Many homes of government officials and parliamentarians were looted during the chaos, demonstrating that public anger has transcended the boundaries of peaceful protests.

The wave of violent protests erupted from public outrage over a series of unpopular economic and social policies implemented by the government. Political experts argue that a significant factor is the massive budget deficit, which has forced the government to seek ways to compensate for losses through measures detrimental to the people. New taxes, such as the carbon tax, along with allegations of state-owned enterprises engaging in land grabbing, have fueled discontent.

The wave of protests is becoming increasingly intense.

In particular, the fact that many localities increased land and property taxes by up to 1,000% to compensate for budget shortfalls has sparked strong protests. Public outrage intensified when these harsh policies were enacted while members of the Lower House of Parliament still enjoyed lavish privileges, such as a monthly housing subsidy of 50 million rupiah (over $3,000).

A tragic turning point ignited nationwide outrage. On August 29, a 21-year-old ride-hailing driver in Jakarta was run over and killed by a police armored vehicle during clashes between security forces and protesters near the parliament building. This incident transformed simmering discontent into a massive wave of protests that spread across the country, carrying a deeper meaning: a protest against the political elite perceived as living lavishly while the people suffered.

Amidst the escalating tensions, President Prabowo Subianto's administration acted swiftly to appease public opinion. The President revoked several unpopular policies, such as withdrawing housing privileges and subsidies for members of parliament. On the police side, a spokesperson for the Indonesian National Police stated that one of the seven officers involved in the accident had been dismissed following an ethics hearing.

Numerous warnings and advisories have been issued to tourists regarding the ongoing protests in Indonesia.

However, President Prabowo insisted that the military and police would resolutely confront "violent crowds," while accusing some protests of having signs of terrorism and treason. Contrary to the President's claims of a stabilizing situation, civil society organizations continued to speak out. The University of Indonesia Student Union called for the establishment of an independent commission to investigate police violence, while condemning the privileges of the legislature while many citizens struggle to make ends meet.

President Prabowo's decision to attend the military parade in China on September 3rd, based on "signs of stability gradually returning to Indonesia," reflects an optimistic assessment from the administration. However, the situation in reality remains fraught with instability. Political experts believe that to thoroughly resolve the issue, the Prabowo administration will have to take more decisive actions to balance the budget fairly, plug corruption loopholes, prevent vested interests, restore public trust, and ensure fairness for all segments of society.
