With airfares soaring, what are some smart travel options for summer 2024?

20/05/2024

The glorious summer has arrived, bringing with it a sweltering atmosphere that awakens the wanderlust in countless people. This is the ideal time to set aside daily worries, immerse oneself in beautiful nature, and enjoy new experiences. However, the high cost of airfare during peak season has become a major obstacle, making many travelers hesitant to plan a summer trip.

According to forecasts, the Vietnamese aviation market will continue to experience a supply-demand imbalance during the peak summer season of 2024. Increased travel demand, especially to tourist and resort destinations, will likely lead to a slight increase in airfares.

Affordable flight times for your travel adventures.

As you can see, airfares are usually higher during peak hours such as early morning and late evening. Nguyen Huyen Vi (living in Hanoi) is flexible in choosing her flight times and dates to find cheaper tickets. She chooses to fly during off-peak hours such as late night or early morning, or on weekdays instead of weekends.

“To save on travel costs for my summer vacation, I chose to fly at night, departing at 11 PM and returning at 5 AM. Since domestic flights usually last less than two hours, flying at night doesn't cause too much inconvenience in terms of time. In addition, choosing this time helps me save on accommodation costs and avoids having to take too many days off work for my trip,” Huyen Vi shared.

Capitalizing on the growing trend of travelers preferring late-night and early-morning flights, on May 15th, Vietnam Airlines launched a program offering nearly 300,000 attractive airfares for domestic routes during the peak summer season. Accordingly, domestic airfares start from only VND 1,098,000/one-way for Economy class and VND 1,905,000/one-way for Business class.

Similarly, travelers can find Vietjet and Vietravel Airlines tickets for as little as 1.2 million VND/one-way for flights departing on weekdays during nighttime hours. Vietjet airfares during the summer are about 20% lower, and Vietravel Airlines about 14% lower. Additionally, travelers can choose flights departing on weekdays and book early, at least 7 days before the planned departure date, to enjoy the best discounted prices.

Traveling by train - A leisurely and poetic experience.

Recently, the aviation market has witnessed a dramatic increase in airfares, especially for domestic flights during peak tourist seasons. This has led many travelers to switch to alternative modes of transportation, with trains emerging as a "shining star" in this context.

According to railway companies, the number of passengers using trains during this period has grown strongly, with some routes even recording a surge of 50-70% compared to the same period last year.

Train travel has emerged as a "shining star".

Hanoi is currently experiencing a prolonged and intense heatwave, leaving many feeling uncomfortable and exhausted. Wanting a change of scenery, Nguyen Hong Hanh (a resident of Hanoi) planned a short trip to the coastal city of Da Nang – a place she has visited many times before.

However, when Hong Hanh checked the round-trip airfare of a budget airline, she was shocked to find it was nearly 4 million VND per person on weekends. This exorbitant price made her hesitate and decide to look for other travel options.

After careful consideration, Hong Hanh decided to try traveling to Da Nang by train. This is not only a cost-effective solution but also promises to bring her new and exciting experiences.

Tourists, both domestic and international, prefer traveling by train because of its affordability, convenience, and safety.

Hong Hanh decided to choose a four-berth air-conditioned sleeper compartment, with an adult ticket price of nearly 1.2 million VND per person. The train departed from Hanoi station at 9:20 PM and was expected to arrive in Da Nang after 17 hours of travel.

“Although I’ve visited this beautiful coastal city many times, I believe that exploring Da Nang by train will give me completely new perspectives. In particular, I’m incredibly excited to capture the moment the train passes through Hai Van Pass – one of the most beautiful railway routes in Vietnam,” Hong Hanh said.

According to information from the railway industry, train routes from Hanoi to Da Nang, Hue, or Dong Hoi (Quang Binh) are currently sold out due to the high number of tourists during the peak summer season. Tourists from both Vietnam and abroad prefer traveling by train because of its affordability, convenience, and safety.

"Late summer vacation" - A new travel trend gaining popularity as airfare prices rise.

Instead of crowding during the three peak summer months with sky-high airfare prices, many travelers are now opting for a "late summer vacation" in the months at the end of the year.

To meet the needs of travelers, Vietjet and Vietravel Airlines have launched a series of attractive promotions, allowing tourists to travel throughout Vietnam at "super cheap" prices. Vietjet is offering tickets for 0 VND and 90,000 VND for flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang, Nha Trang, Quy Nhon, Da Lat, Phu Quoc, etc. Similarly, Vietravel Airlines is also offering super cheap fares starting from only 8,000 VND (excluding taxes and fees) for flights departing between 12 PM and 2 PM on Mondays to Fridays.

Zero-fare air tickets from Vietnamese airlines are becoming a sensation, attracting the attention of many travelers. However, hunting for these "super cheap" tickets is not easy because the number of tickets is limited and they are released in a "drip-feed" strategy.

The number of zero-fare tickets sold for each flight route is very limited, sometimes only 2-3 tickets. The zero-fare ticket sales period each day can last about two hours. However, due to high traffic, travelers may have difficulty accessing the website or application.

Trinh Phuong Thao (living in Hanoi) is planning a trip to Phu Quoc at the end of the year and aims to snag a 0-dollar air ticket. Sharing her reasons for choosing this time, Phuong Thao said: “The biggest expense when traveling is usually the airfare. Booking tickets too far in advance also carries risks such as schedule changes due to work or health issues… Therefore, I want to take advantage of the 0-dollar ticket program to save money and have more flexibility in arranging my time.”

However, hunting for zero-fare tickets is not easy at all. Phuong Thao also shared: "I've been following airline promotions recently, and I've noticed that zero-fare tickets are usually released in limited quantities and sell out quickly. Therefore, you need patience and luck to be able to snag one."
