Explaining the scarcity and high price of airline tickets even outside of holidays, the Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority stated that the current fleet of Vietnamese airlines is 213 aircraft, a decrease of 18 aircraft compared to 2023. Of these, the number of aircraft actually in operation ranges from 165 to 170, a decrease of approximately 40 to 50 aircraft compared to the average in 2023.
Some Vietnamese airlines are implementing restructuring measures, returning aircraft and cutting operations on some routes, causing aircraft turnover and further driving up airfares.
The reason for this decline is that in September 2023, engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney announced a recall of the PW1100 engine (estimated to affect 600-700 PW1100 engines currently in operation on fleets worldwide) for extensive inspection and repair to correct a manufacturing defect.
To minimize the impact on passengers, the Ministry of Transport has requested the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam to direct airlines to urgently study and develop operational plans, supplement aircraft to ensure and maintain transport capacity, especially during the April 30th and May 1st holidays and the upcoming peak summer season.
At the same time, implement solutions to reduce delays and cancellations, improve service quality, and strictly enforce regulations and rules related to the carrier's obligations.
The Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority advises organizations and individuals using air transport services to research and choose appropriate modes and means of transportation to their destinations, including Con Dao, and to proactively monitor information on airline flight schedules to plan accordingly and book tickets early when choosing air travel.
Organizations and individuals should purchase tickets through official airline ticket offices and agents to ensure their rights are protected, and should inform the Civil Aviation Authority, regional airport authorities, or other competent state agencies via hotline in case of any issues affecting passenger rights.
