According to an update from the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) at 0:30 AM on October 10th (US time), the storm's intensity had decreased to Category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale with wind speeds of 144 km/h, CNN reported. The NHC stated that the storm's center would move away from the eastern Florida coast before dawn, with rain and wind gradually weakening in the morning. However, the agency noted that Hurricane Milton continues to cause dangerous flooding and strong winds throughout central Florida.
Following the storm, residents in the affected areas are struggling to clear the debris. Along with this, anecdotal stories about the day the storm struck are attracting significant public attention in the country.
Hurricane Milton left devastating consequences across the United States.
Recently, on her personal page, an account named Alyssa Sprake shared her experience of sheltering from a storm at Disneyland in Orlando. The guest stated that she was one of the guests stranded at the resort. In the video she posted, Alyssa showed close-ups of the food relief packages prepared by resort staff for guests.
The relief package, which was posted on social media, has sparked much controversy.
Accordingly, the resort displayed an emergency sandwich kit including a jar of peanut butter, jelly, slices of bread, etc. Initially, some guests expressed gratitude for receiving the meal at the accommodation. Soon after, they felt "bitter" when they learned that each food package would cost $10 (250,000 VND). Alyssa's video quickly attracted millions of views with many mixed opinions. Among them, many people argued that the resort should have provided these food items for free.
"Clearly, this is a large corporation and they are capable of giving things away for free to those unfortunate guests who were stranded," one social media user commented. Speaking to a Business Insider reporter, another tourist who was at the resort when Hurricane Milton hit said the property proactively offered a 40% discount to those stranded. They also received discounts on meals at the restaurant.
Milton is the third hurricane to hit Florida this year, following Hurricanes Francine and Helene. The phenomenon of three hurricanes making landfall in Florida in the same year has only been recorded five times so far: in 1871, 1886, 1964, 2004, and 2005.
