This is the first time Google has honored a typical Vietnamese dish. This activity is to celebrate the 9th anniversary of the original Vietnamese word “banh mi” being included as an entry in the Oxford dictionary (March 24, 2011 - March 24, 2020).
Images and instructions for making Vietnamese bread appeared on Google's homepage on March 24, 2020 with fun graphics.
According to Google Doodles: Vietnamese sandwiches may have appeared in the 1950s in many bustling alleys of Saigon. But historically, sandwiches originated from the French-Vietnamese cultural exchange. Starting from long baguettes with cold cuts and butter or cheese, they have been changed, adding more flavors with optional fillings such as pork, pork sausage, pâté or meatballs, served with sweet and sour pickles, herbs, onions, cilantro, a little soy sauce, chili sauce or fresh chili... full of sour, spicy, salty, sweet flavors and creating a typical dish of Vietnamese cuisine.

Vietnamese bread has received many compliments from famous chefs and food critics around the world.
During his visit to Hoi An (Quang Nam), chef Anthony Bourdain tasted Phuong bread and declared it “the best bread in the world”. Images of delicious Vietnamese sandwiches appeared on his No Reservations channel and gradually became more famous around the world.

The Guardian once ranked Vietnamese banh mi second in its list of the world’s best street foods. David Farley, BBC travel and food writer, also praised Vietnamese banh mi as “the best sandwich in the world.”
Bread is a dish with a wide variety of flavors to meet the needs of Vietnamese people.
This inexpensive street food is also very popular with tourists and is always on the list of must-try dishes for foreign tourists when visiting Vietnam.
On the Google Vietnam homepage, the Hoi An ancient town symbol, the Ca Tru founder's death anniversary, and major holidays such as Vietnamese Teachers' Day, Mid-Autumn Festival, Lunar New Year, National Day, etc. have also been honored. But this is the first time a Vietnamese dish has been honored and even appeared on the Google homepage of many other countries.
