Hanoi ranked 6th in the category of the World's Most Attractive Destinations Awards, which included 25 destinations chosen by TripAdvisor travelers in 2021. The rankings were based on TripAdvisor travelers' votes on places they visited in 2020 when tourism reopened, as well as places travelers wished to visit while staying at home due to travel restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
Hanoi has changed its name many times, from Thang Long (meaning "ascending dragon") to Dong Do and Hanoi, but it has preserved the beauty of the past intertwined with the modern, with many landmarks and places bearing cultural and historical imprints. In addition, the lakes, parks, tree-lined avenues, and over 600 temples and pagodas further enhance the city's appeal, making it easily accessible by taxi.
Hanoi Old Quarter
Additionally, the Vietnamese city of Hoi An ranked 11th in this category. TripAdvisor noted that Hoi An – a city on the central coast – is a prime example of a well-preserved important Southeast Asian trading port dating from the 15th to the 19th centuries. Hoi An is a favorite stop for backpackers and is becoming increasingly well-known to tourists. Some popular attractions in Hoi An include the Japanese Bridge and the Quan Cong Temple. TripAdvisor also recommends visiting tailor shops to have custom-made clothing tailored by the city's skilled tailors.
Hoi An Old Town
In addition to the World's Most Attractive Destinations Award, the 2021 TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice Awards also include Popular Destinations and Emerging Destinations Around the World. With travelers more eager than ever to enjoy the outdoors due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2021 awards introduced a new category: World's Most Attractive National Parks.
