Illegal Vietnamese residents, South Korea changes 5-year visa regulations

11/06/2019

According to the latest information, from June 10, Vietnamese citizens without permanent residence in Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City will be banned from applying for a 5-year visa to Korea using a simple application due to many problems.

The reason for this decision is the sharp increase in the rate of fake temporary residence books and the rate of illegal immigrants in Korea on 5-year visas. The latest decision from Korea is a big change for those who intend to apply for 5-year visas.

Currently, if you want to apply for a 5-year visa, you must prove your financial status as usual and must meet the condition of having traveled to Korea at least four times in the last two years. As for those who have a household registration book in the three major cities of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang, that household registration book must be issued for at least one year to be eligible for a preferential five-year visa. The required documents include a passport, visa application, identity card, and household registration book that needs to be translated (in English or Korean) and notarized.

Those whose household registration books have been issued for less than a year must apply for a visa with proof of financial resources as usual. In cases where the purpose of entry is doubtful, additional documents proving occupation or financial capacity may be required.

Previously, since December 2018, South Korea has applied a policy of issuing multiple visas for a period of 5 years to Vietnamese citizens with household registration or temporary residence in Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City. However, this has given rise to many problems such as fighting for places in queues, buying and selling application forms... The Korean Consulate only receives about 300 cases per day. However, the number of people in need is estimated to be in the thousands.

To solve this problem, the Korean Embassy has changed the way they receive applications. Instead of receiving them directly at the Consulate, they have switched to submitting applications through the Korean Visa Center.
