Crochet is back in full swing around the world
Crochet is taking the fashion world by storm. The ancient tradition of knitting dates back thousands of years and has evolved into many different styles and techniques. Crochet first appeared in a European magazine in 1823.
Knitting and crocheting became a hobby for women after World War II. In the 1970s, crochet squares became a big trend. Because of their fun colors, these crochet patterns fit well with the boho-chic style of hippies. They wanted a comfortable yet sexy and colorful fashion, so crochet squares/circles became a trend.
2021 marks the return of a series of retro trends and is promoted by major designers on fashion runways such as Fendi, Valentino, Gucci,... Gucci's Creative Director Alessandro Michele is a huge fan of 1970s retro fashion. With his support, flared jeans, corduroy and crochet are back in full swing.

Fendi also introduced crochet designs in the Spring-Summer 2021 show with a strategy of layering sheer and crochet fabrics. The monochrome designs with unique shapes brought both elegance and spontaneity to the fabric.

Not only with clothes, the crochet trend has also spread to accessories, typically handbags and hats with a variety of designs and colors. More uniquely, designers also use this technique to apply to small, pretty accessories such as earrings, necklaces, and belts to create highlights for outfits.

Crochet trend "blooms" in Vietnam in summer 2021
The retro trend is on the rise recently, so the crochet trend is expected to be very popular in the near future. In Vietnam, many artists are enthusiastically promoting this fashion trend.
The semi-open style with crocheted clothes is very popular with Vietnamese stars because it helps to highlight the sexy, liberal but still youthful look, so most stars choose crochet for street fashion or to wear to the beach instead of bikini.

Chau Bui writes on her blog: “There are two reasons why Chau really likes the crochet trend this season. Firstly, crochet is an eco-friendly material and can be produced from recycled fabrics. Secondly, this year's crochet designs are really diverse, both sweet and sexy, with extremely cute pastel colors, such as pink, purple, or small flowers.”
Not only being promoted by celebrities, crochet outfits have also become an inspiration for Vietnamese fashion designers to create new collections. This year, some Vietnamese designers such as Nguyen Cong Tri and Le Thanh Hoa did not hesitate to promote this material in their Spring-Summer 2021 collections.
