Artist Hanh Tran: "If you stop creating art, you are depriving yourself of the opportunity to discover yourself."

12/11/2023

I visited artist Hanh Tran’s studio on a sunny morning. The room was about 25 square meters, with two large windows on the side, very airy. The window welcomed the pristine morning sunlight and gentle breezes… pouring onto the paintings displayed on three walls of the room.

She had intended to pursue a career in fashion design, but when she began to seriously study drawing, Hanh Tran was guided by her teacher to focus on developing in the fine arts industry. The young female artist born in 1996 grew up in a large family in Binh Dinh province. She was fortunate to have early exposure to her father's intricately carved wooden art products. Growing up with meticulous observations of the carpentry industry was deeply engraved in her mind, giving Hanh Tran many sources of inspiration for artistic creation, greatly influencing her first works.

KEEPING THE OLD THING... IS REFUSE TO DISCOVER YOURSELF

Wherever she went, she carefully observed wooden furniture products. This was also one of Hanh Tran's first creative subjects when she was studying painting at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts. She borrowed chairs, tables, cabinets... and focused on color blocks, light, and contrast to express her inner self.

Coffee paintings series by Hanh Tran.

The series of paintings on the theme of coffee shops, or tables and chairs, has helped Hanh Tran become more known to art lovers. "When talking about Hanh, we immediately think of coffee paintings", but that does not mean she keeps her old style. "In fact, Hanh is also in the process of learning and shaping her personal style, and does not stubbornly stick to the painting style that has been accepted by many people. Hanh wants her perspective to not only be on objects, but also on landscapes, on human activities...", the female artist confided.

2023 is a year that marks many changes in Hanh Tran's artistic creations. She gradually shifted to landscape themes, deeply exploring people's daily activities. From the perspective of a young and enthusiastic person, the artist's recent works are full of new inspiration, dynamism and sensual movement in the paintings.

A new work by Hanh Tran.

Hanh is not afraid to change to understand herself better through painting. There are people who shape and maintain a creative style, because they are afraid that the audience will no longer recognize them if they change. Hanh Tran is the opposite. "Many people no longer want to talk to her since she changed her style. But perhaps, if you stop creating art, you are depriving yourself of the opportunity to discover yourself," she shared.

DRAW FOR YOURSELF… OR FOR OTHERS?

Like many other young artists when they first started their career, Hanh Tran also struggled with herself. There were times when she "picked up a brush but didn't know what to draw", she and many of her peers doubted her own abilities. Even when she officially participated in painting full-time, she could not avoid losing or breaking inspiration. The female artist born in 1996 confided: "Hanh was lucky because she understood that constant ups and downs, found a way to balance her emotions, passion for creation and take care of herself. Then she continued to look for new sources of inspiration to create."

Hạnh Trần luôn tìm cách để cân bằng năng lượng và nguồn cảm hứng sáng tác.

Hanh Tran always finds ways to balance her energy and creative inspiration.

True artists, perhaps, would never “sell out” their works, bending their brushstrokes to fit the eyes of others. Perhaps it is not rare for artists, because of the burden of making a living, to choose to put their creative personality below basic pursuits.

For Hanh Tran, artistic creation is an independent, natural process that is not influenced by the outside world. "I remind myself to always pursue the path of art in the most selfless way. Artists in general, and painters in particular, still need to make a living, but for Hanh, that is enough," the female painter confided.

Talking with Hanh Tran, I felt the positive, fresh energy from the young artist. In addition to being a full-time artist, Hanh Tran is also a painting teacher, still enthusiastically sharing her passion for painting with her students. Every day for Hanh is a new source of inspiration to live, work and create.
