On the afternoon of October 4, the Office of the People's Committee of Quang Nam province announced that Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Tran Anh Tuan had signed a decision approving the aid for the project to build Hoi An into a friendly tourist city, not consuming dog and cat meat and supporting the elimination of rabies; at the same time, assigning the People's Committee of Hoi An city to be the project owner.
The project received non-refundable aid from Four Paws International with a total capital of more than 1.1 billion VND.
The project will run from September 2022 to December 2023, aiming to build Hoi An into a friendly tourist city that does not consume dog and cat meat. At the same time, it will raise public awareness of the importance of rabies vaccination and health risks from the dog and cat meat trade; provide technical support and increase the rate of rabies vaccination for dogs and cats; and reduce the risk of rabies to humans.
Hoi An will build a city that "says no" to the consumption of dog and cat meat.
From this aid, the locality will install permanent information boards in public places, develop propaganda publications for animal welfare activities, vaccinate and care for dogs and cats at veterinary facilities; produce weekly radio programs with information encouraging rabies vaccination, warning about the dangers of rabies. In particular, encourage people not to eat dog and cat meat.
The project also provides financial and technical support for rabies vaccination for dogs and cats; monitors and enforces regulations related to the consumption of dog and cat meat at restaurants and slaughterhouses in Hoi An ancient town. In addition, it supports the conversion of business forms for some dog and cat meat businesses.
Quang Nam Province requests the People's Committee of Hoi An City to coordinate with sponsors, relevant agencies and units to develop a detailed project operation plan and use the funding to ensure the correct purpose and target of the approved project.
Previously, on December 10, 2021, Hoi An City People's Committee signed an online agreement with Four Paws (a global animal welfare organization) on a commitment to eliminate the use of dog and cat meat.
