Quang Nam province has approved aid for a project to develop Hoi An into a tourist-friendly city that does not consume dog or cat meat.

On the afternoon of October 4th, the Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee Office announced that Vice Chairman Tran Anh Tuan had signed a decision approving the grant for the project to build Hoi An into a friendly tourist city that does not consume dog or cat meat and supports the elimination of rabies; and assigned the Hoi An City People's Committee as the project owner.

The project received a non-refundable grant of over 1.1 billion VND from Four Paws International.

The project, implemented from September 2022 to December 2023, aimed to transform Hoi An into a friendly tourist city free from the consumption of dog and cat meat. Simultaneously, it sought to raise community awareness about the importance of rabies vaccination and the health risks posed by the dog and cat meat trade; provide technical support and improve rabies vaccination rates for dogs and cats; and reduce the risk of rabies in humans.

Hoi An will build a city that says "no" to the consumption of dog and cat meat.

With this aid, the locality will install permanent information boards in public places, create publications promoting animal welfare activities, vaccination and care for dogs and cats at veterinary facilities; produce weekly radio programs with information encouraging rabies vaccination and warning about the dangers of rabies. In particular, it will encourage people not to eat dog and cat meat.

The project also provides financial and technical support for vaccinating dogs and cats against rabies; monitors and enforces regulations related to the consumption of dog and cat meat at restaurants and slaughterhouses in the Hoi An Old Town area. In addition, it supports the conversion of business models for some dog and cat meat businesses.

Quang Nam province requested the People's Committee of Hoi An city to coordinate with the sponsor and relevant agencies and units to develop a detailed project activity plan and use the donated funds to ensure they are used for the approved project's purpose and target beneficiaries.

Previously, on December 10, 2021, the People's Committee of Hoi An City signed an online agreement with Four Paws (a global animal welfare organization) committing to eliminate the use of dog and cat meat.
