Hong Kong launches bus tour for sleepyheads

On this unique trip, passengers only need to bring a pair of headphones or an eye mask, so they can sleep soundly until the final stop.

Sleeping on the bus is a unique new tour appearing in Hong Kong, inspired by the trend of employees falling asleep on public transport after tiring working hours.

The five-hour double-decker bus tour, covering a distance of 76 km, was created to cater to people who often have trouble sleeping but can easily fall asleep on public transport.

The trip costs between 13 and 51 USD per person (about 300,000 to more than 1 million VND), depending on the type of seat on the first or second floor. Passengers only need to bring headphones or eye masks to be able to sleep peacefully on the bus.

What is special is that before the first trip on October 16, all tickets for the tour were sold out in a short time. Some people were so excited that they even prepared their own blankets and pillows to bring along.

During the tour, the bus will stop at some scenic spots on Dalshan Island.

Anson Kong, one of the first guests on the tour, shared: “I have been having trouble sleeping lately so I wanted to try this trip. As a result, I slept soundly for 5 hours. This tour was much more enjoyable than I expected.”

Another passenger, Marco Yung, described the tour as a “great opportunity” to rest, and said he decided to join because he often fell asleep on long bus trips.

"While I was thinking about this new type of tour, I came across a post from a friend on social media. He shared that he was stressed out from work, which led to insomnia at night. However, he slept perfectly well on the bus," said Kenneth Kong, marketing and business development director of Ulu Travel, a company that organizes sightseeing bus tours. "That inspired him and his team to create this new type of tourism."

Many people were excited to join the tour on the first days.

“In general, Hong Kong people do not have enough sleep time, they often take advantage of the time traveling to work to take a nap,” said Dr. Shirley Li, principal investigator of the Sleep Research Clinic and Laboratory at the University of Hong Kong. “For them, transportation is the ideal place to rest, instead of the comfortable beds at home.”
