What should you avoid doing on long-haul flights?

Wearing uncomfortable clothes, sitting near the restroom, forgetting to bring snacks... these are common mistakes many people make on long-haul flights.

Travel experts have compiled a list of common mistakes travelers make on long-haul flights, and here are some things to keep in mind.

Wearing uncomfortable clothes

Even if you want to look glamorous, elegant, or beautiful on a plane, you should still choose comfortable clothes rather than fashionable ones.

Phil Dengler, co-founder of the travel website Vacationer, told Yahoo: "You'll be sitting in one place for at least six hours or more, so it's essential to be as comfortable as possible."

Items like jeans and thick jackets should be avoided. Instead, opt for stretchy, soft clothing such as leggings and jumpers. Choose comfortable sneakers or sandals that are easy to take off, but you shouldn't go barefoot on the plane.

Wear loose-fitting clothes for comfort rather than fashionable attire on a long flight.

Sit near the toilet.

Avoid areas near restrooms, even if you need to use the toilet frequently. Paul Jacobs, a travel expert from Kayak, explains: "Sitting near the restroom might seem convenient for long flights. But the truth is, it's not pleasant at all when you're sitting in a place where there's always a long line of people waiting their turn."

Instead, choose a spot away from this area. Consider each restroom trip as an opportunity to move around and get some exercise after sitting for a long time. And choose a spot where you can comfortably stretch your legs.

Forgot to bring snacks?

Food served on long flights is often not very good, due to passenger fatigue and altitude pressure contributing to altered taste. The worst thing is sitting through an entire long flight with nothing to eat, or food that doesn't suit your taste.

Phil explained, "I always bring snacks on long-haul flights and have never regretted it. Food choices on airplanes are always limited, so bringing my own allows me to eat whatever I want, whenever I want."

Consuming alcoholic beverages

Alcoholic beverages like wine and beer have a high alcohol content, so if you're prone to motion sickness on airplanes, you should limit your consumption. While some international flights do serve wine or beer with meals, you should only drink in moderation.

It's important to stay comfortable and alert throughout the flight, not just the first few hours, so don't overdo it and make your body uncomfortable and tired.

But whatever you do, don't forget to do some light exercise to relieve fatigue during the flight.

Choose a seat near the emergency exit.

Aside from first class and business class, the seats near the emergency exits are arguably the most comfortable and spacious on the plane. However, to get a seat there, you should check in early, at least two hours before departure. Note that sitting in this row means you are responsible for assisting others in an emergency. If you don't mind that, then it's truly an ideal seat; you can stretch your legs without bothering anyone.

Gentle exercise

When traveling on long-haul flights, always remember to listen to your body's needs. If you feel tired, take a short nap. You don't need to worry about missing a meal while you sleep.

You can also ask the flight attendants for food when you wake up. If you're already awake, enjoy a movie or read a good book. But whatever you do, don't forget to do some light exercise to relieve fatigue during the flight. Simply rotating your wrists, stretching your legs, massaging your feet, or walking around the plane will help you stay healthy.
