The movieParastie - ParasiteDirector Bong Joon-ho's film has just won four prestigious Oscars. It is the first Asian film to win best picture and also the first foreign film to win best picture in the nearly 100-year history of the Oscars.


Parasitehas successfully depicted the harsh polarization of rich and poor in modern Korean society. While the rich and upper class of Korea live in expensive villas or luxurious high-end apartments, the poor live crowded together in dirty, damp, and dark houses.
Guryong is a bleak symbol of income inequality in South Korea.

In fact, in the midst of a modern and flashy Seoul, there is actually a suburban slum called Guryong. The Gangnam district's skyscrapers are right behind the slums.
In fact, from that shabby slum, it only takes 20 minutes to walk to Gangnam - an area where the richest and most luxurious people in Seoul live with skyscrapers. Many photographers have come here to record the daily life of the people through their lenses to portray the most realistic image.



...to real life
This slum began to appear in 1988 and has an area of nearly 300,000 m2Guryong Village is essentially a makeshift settlement of nearly 4,000 people, mostly poor elderly people living on government subsidies. Residents here can build makeshift houses or tents with whatever materials they have: plastic, tarpaulins, advertising banners, wooden planks... and share toilets.



This slum began to appear in 1988 and has an area of nearly 300,000 m2.
In 2014, a fire destroyed dozens of homes and killed one person, the 11th fire in the area since 2009. In recent years, Guryong residents have been connected to postal services. They have also received temporary residence cards that give them the right to vote in elections.
Living here are mainly poor elderly people living on government subsidies.


Several years ago, the Seoul government planned to clear this slum and build resettlement housing for the poor, but until now it is still only in the planning stage.
