Christmas in the West, especially Europe, is imbued with a tradition that has lasted for four centuries through Christmas markets.
When talking about Christmas markets in Germany, you definitely cannot miss Nuremberg, the second largest city in the state of Bayern (Bavaria). The Christmas market here is considered the largest and most famous in the world.
The Nuremberg Christmas Fair is usually open for almost a month from November 28th to December 24th, from 10am to 9pm. It is known as the oldest market in Europe, having existed since 1628. The fair has nearly 180 stalls displaying all kinds of Christmas items.

As an international student living and working in Nuremberg, Nguyen Vu Van Anh did not miss the opportunity to stroll around the market, enjoy the specialties and capture the bustling moments of Christmas.
“After the Covid-19 pandemic, life returned to normal. Tourism activities were resumed. People from many countries around the world eagerly flocked to Nuremberg to visit, shop, and immerse themselves in the hustle and bustle of the market. The Christmas atmosphere is everywhere. In my opinion, this year's Christmas market is larger than last year's,” Van Anh shared.

Nuremberg is one of the most popular tourist cities in Germany during the Christmas season, with about two million visitors each holiday. Tourists from all over the world eagerly flock to Nuremberg to see how Germans celebrate Christmas. This is also the time when the city becomes the most bustling and noisy, making people temporarily forget the quiet, ancient, peaceful image of this place every day.
Strolling around the Nuremberg Christmas market, it is not difficult to find all kinds of items from traditional items such as wooden toys, delicately handcrafted decorations, to specially shaped sweets to match the festive atmosphere. In addition, you will find new products here such as hand-crocheted stuffed toys, mail trains, nativity figures, hand-crafted tin figures and many more.

According to Van Anh, there are many activities taking place in Nuremberg in the run-up to Christmas, from church concerts, Christmas tours to performances by choirs and musicians, big and small, on the stage at the main market. There is nothing better than listening to music while enjoying Glühwein (wine made from red grapes that has been heated). Not only that, visitors can also enjoy cakes, chocolate cakes, small sandwiches with grilled sausages...
The most famous specialty of Nuremberg, especially during Christmas, is Lebkuchen (gingerbread). You can find this cake all over the world, but when you come here, you will have more choices and it is more special. The scent of homemade gingerbread will make anyone's heart flutter.
Talking to Travellive, Van Anh said: “Luckily, I live right in the city of Nuremberg, so I was able to immerse myself in the hustle and bustle of the market on the opening day. In my free time, I walk around the market with my friends. I love looking at the sparkling Christmas decorations, statues, hand-woven animals, and of course, don’t forget to enjoy a cup of hot Glühwein.”

Bustling streets during Christmas
To get to the world's most famous Christmas market, Van Anh suggests that from the main station of Nuremberg city, you can take the subway or bus right next to the market. Besides, visitors can also walk to admire the panoramic view of the road from the station to the center of the market. The walking distance is a few hundred meters, only takes about 5 minutes on foot.
As the night falls, the streets and markets begin to light up, Nuremberg shines even more splendidly with sparkling lights from all around the old town. Therefore, many people around the world whisper to each other that Christmas is a must in Nuremberg. Because it is difficult to miss a bustling festival with traditional medieval colors like here.
