Lisbon - a 24-hour journey across continents, through 5 cities to the Atlantic coast.

09/08/2024

Have you ever tried experiencing a 24-hour flight from Asia to Europe, traversing five cities with three transits, hurried meals, and interrupted sleep, only to finally wake up in one of the most beautiful cities in the world?

"Stepping out into the world" is truly an "ideology" for millions of people; when mentioned, everyone lights up, and plans and dreams of traveling here and there arise. However, some places remain forever just "I'll definitely" stories due to various factors. Too far and time-consuming to travel; too close so you can go anytime; too complicated in terms of the route… There are countless reasons why we want to go to a place but can never quite get there.

My most memorable travel experience to date was my trip to Lisbon – the capital of Portugal, often described as a jewel on the Atlantic coast. What was remarkable was that it took me 24 hours of flying, through 5 cities and with 3 layovers, to get there.

LISBON – NEAR YET FAR, FAR YET NEAR

Previously, I only knew Portugal as the homeland of Luis Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo, and the team that won the European Championship in 2016... and that was it. I got a rough idea of the country when I went to Macau, because of the distinctive architecture still preserved in many destinations in this land famous for its casinos. But I also heard many people praise Portugal, saying its architecture is beautiful, the cost of living is cheap, and there are many places to visit...

Before going to Lisbon, I had traveled to Europe several times, visiting many famous tourist cities. However, Lisbon was quite inconvenient to fly from Vietnam. When I had a business trip to Spain, I hesitated about whether I should "take the opportunity" to visit Lisbon, as I heard that it was only close by plane from Spain, while other places in Europe were quite far and inconvenient to fly from. Ultimately, I decided to leave three days earlier to explore Lisbon, then return to Barcelona for work.

Booking tickets at the last minute meant a headache choosing the most reasonable route, both in terms of cost and time. As a result, I had a unique experience, the first of my life: traveling through five countries and territories in 24 hours. Starting at Noi Bai Airport (Hanoi), I transited in Hong Kong before flying on to Munich (Germany). From Germany, I flew to Barcelona (Spain) and then continued my journey to Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. During those 24 hours, I snatched a few naps on the plane and wandered around the airport with three layovers.

Lisbon is indeed very far away, but the distance reveals similarities to Asia – a vibrant nightlife, a bustling atmosphere, and a rich street culture. After a 24-hour flight, I arrived in Lisbon at dusk. Leaving aside the city's scenery, what shocked me most in Lisbon was the price. Everything was surprisingly cheap. Compared to Italy, France, or even Spain, spending money in Lisbon felt like being in Eastern Europe or Vietnam.

Time Out Market is a famous market in the city. Here, you can enjoy many fusion dishes, but in a more affordable way. Dishes that you might think could only be enjoyed at fine dining are served on disposable paper plates and bowls – convenient, lightweight, and of course, cheaper. I've returned here twice just for the pan-seared tuna. The tuna is cooked through on the outside but still bright red and fresh inside; one bite feels like the fish melts in your mouth, delicious and incredibly addictive. Lisbon is also famous for its rich and creamy egg tarts, which are great as a dessert or a quick snack.

Lisbon's atmosphere is youthful and vibrant, like a young woman in her late twenties who just wants to sneak out and party every night. I stayed at a homestay in the middle of a square. In the evenings, young people sat there drinking beer, singing, and dancing. My first day was a bit jet lag-ridden; I went to bed early at 10 PM, but the crowd was still chilling outside all night. They didn't finish partying until 7 AM the next morning, and it wasn't until 8 AM that everyone went home.

During my three days in Lisbon, I wandered through Alfama, one of Lisbon's oldest neighborhoods. Alfama boasts sloping streets, orange trees laden with fruit, vintage trams clanging along, and sun-drenched tiled roofs. Somewhere on a tiled roof, a street artist was playing music.

Alfama is a labyrinth of narrow streets and alleys, brimming with hidden treasures at every corner. The area is famous for its traditional Fado music, which resonates throughout the streets from local pubs. The melodies of Fado offer an authentic glimpse into Portuguese culture and spirit.

SINTRA – A HIDDEN GEM IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN

Having arrived in Lisbon, you must also visit Sintra – a neighboring city just a short train ride away. This small city stands out with its natural beauty and ancient architecture, creating a fairytale scene in real life. Sintra, with its magnificent palaces, stunning gardens, and pleasant climate, offers a haven from the hustle and bustle of the capital.

Sintra boasts structures of breathtaking grandeur and antiquity. Pena Palace and Moorish castles offer magnificent and opulent settings straight out of a fairy tale.

And a short distance from there, I arrived at the Cabo da Roca lighthouse – known as the westernmost point of Europe, where the sea and sky meet at the endless horizon, where land ends and sea begins. Cabo da Roca is not only geographically significant but also stands out with its pristine and majestic natural beauty. It's truly only by standing here that you can appreciate the vastness of the ocean. From this westernmost point, across the Atlantic Ocean lies Africa. This is the ideal place to watch the sunset, as the sun slowly sinks into the sea, painting the horizon red and creating breathtaking moments.

If I had more time on that trip, I would have gone down to the Porto region to enjoy the famous Porto sweet wine right where it's produced. But Lisbon and Sintra were so captivating, and if I hadn't been so impulsive and enthusiastic that day, Portugal might still be in my stories now, but "I'll leave at some point."

"Stepping out into the world"—a decision that was more than just a geographical move, but also an expansion of the mind and heart. The cobblestone streets of Lisbon, the ancient palaces of Sintra, and the breathtaking scenery of Cabo da Roca taught me many lessons about history, culture, and natural beauty. Looking back, I realize how these experiences have profoundly influenced my decisions, my commitment, and my adventurous spirit.
