Opening up visa services - A "gateway" to the recovery of Vietnamese tourism.

13/03/2023

Numerous businesses, associations, and the Tourism Advisory Council have submitted proposals and recommendations to the Government, requesting an expansion of visa policies to revive tourism.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Vietnam's tourism industry is facing numerous challenges in its recovery process, particularly in attracting international tourists. One solution to overcome these difficulties is to improve and streamline visa policies.

Vietnam currently grants visa-free entry to 24 countries and territories. In contrast, Thailand grants visa-free entry to nearly 70 countries, and Singapore to almost 180… They also allow longer stays, multiple entries and exits, and a much more relaxed system than Vietnam.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Vietnam's tourism industry welcomed 18 million international visitors annually, half the number of Thailand. In 2022, the number dropped to only 3.6 million, one-third of Thailand's figure. In 2023, this gap could widen even further.

In 2019, Vietnam welcomed 18 million international tourists, only one-fifth the number of domestic tourists, but they accounted for more than half of the total revenue. With a more open and flexible visa policy, businesses and experts believe that international tourist numbers will quickly increase again, making a significant contribution to domestic tourism.
