Open visa - "Door" to restore Vietnam tourism

13/03/2023

A series of businesses, associations and the Tourism Advisory Council have sent proposals and recommendations to the Government, asking for the expansion of visa policies to restore tourism.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, Vietnam's tourism industry is facing many difficulties in the recovery process, especially in attracting international visitors. One of the solutions to overcome this is to improve the visa policy in a transparent way.

Vietnam currently exempts visas for 24 countries and territories. While Thailand exempts visas for nearly 70 countries, Singapore for nearly 180 countries… They also allow visitors to stay longer, have multiple entries and exits, much more freely than our country.

Việt Nam hiện miễn thị thực cho 24 quốc gia và vùng lãnh thổ.

Vietnam currently offers visa exemption to 24 countries and territories.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Vietnam welcomed 18 million international visitors per year, half of Thailand's. In 2022, the number of visitors dropped to only 3.6 million, one-third of Thailand's. In 2023, this gap could be even larger.

In 2019, Vietnam welcomed 18 million international visitors, only one-fifth of domestic visitors, but accounting for more than half of total revenue. If there is an open and flexible visa policy, businesses and experts believe that international visitors will quickly increase again, contributing significantly to domestic tourism.
