The total number of tourists from various countries on the 6 international cruise ships that canceled their trips to Nha Trang City in January 2025 is approximately 16,000 - 17,000 people.
The cancellation of international cruise ships such as Quantum of the Seas, Celebrity, Regatta, Seven Seas Explorer, and Noordam has caused a major shock to Nha Trang's tourism industry. With a total of over 15,200 tourists affected, hotels, restaurants, and tourism services in the coastal city are facing a bleak year-end tourist season. In particular, the consecutive cancellation of three voyages by the Celebrity has exacerbated the situation.
The cancellation of international cruise ships to Nha Trang will have a significant impact on many aspects, including travel agencies, shipping companies, international tourists, and the tourism reputation of Nha Trang - Khanh Hoa.
According to the director of Hai Dang Nha Trang Maritime Agency Co., Ltd., from now until the end of 2024, only 3 out of 10 international cruise ship voyages for which Hai Dang Nha Trang acts as an agent have not been cancelled. One of these is scheduled to bring tourists from various countries to dock at Cam Ranh International Port (Khanh Hoa province) in about 10 days.
The reason for the cancellation of the aforementioned international cruise ships is that Nha Trang Port Joint Stock Company has announced the "cancellation of all registered plans and temporary suspension of receiving international passenger ships from September 20, 2024, in order to ensure absolute safety for people and vessels, minimize the possibility of unfortunate incidents, and to facilitate repairs."
According to Nha Trang Port Joint Stock Company, inspection results show that the 10,000 DWT wharf at Nha Trang Port has been damaged, affecting security and safety during use. Therefore, this wharf is no longer suitable for receiving passenger ships. The port is currently repairing the wharf and the reopening date has not yet been determined.
The incident has had a significant impact on the local tourism industry.
Many businesses and agencies specializing in receiving cruise ship passengers are also considering canceling their trips to Nha Trang from now until the end of 2024 and throughout 2025. According to the Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Tourism, Nha Trang planned to welcome 44 cruise ships this year. However, due to the prolonged renovation of Nha Trang port, only 27 ships have been received so far, bringing in over 55,500 passengers.
According to the Director of the Khanh Hoa Department of Tourism, a meeting with relevant agencies and units is scheduled for October 15th to find solutions for receiving cruise ship tourists from now until the end of 2024 and throughout 2025, as directed by the Provincial People's Committee. Prior to this, the Nha Trang Maritime Port Authority chaired a meeting with the Nha Trang City People's Committee, the Department of Tourism, the Department of Transport, and various businesses to address the challenges in receiving cruise ships.
