Venice is located in northeastern Italy, just 1 meter above sea level, with a total area of 414.57 km², including 118 islands of varying sizes, 160 canals, more than 500 bridges, and 115 churches.

Venice has many nicknames such as: "City of Canals", "Queen of the Adriatic Sea", "Water City", "City of Masks", "City of Bridges", "Floating City", "City of Canals"... According to legend, Venice was founded in 421 by Romans fleeing from the Goths. However, there are no historical records about Venice's origins.
Venice is known as the "City of Bridges".
From the 9th to the 12th centuries, Venice developed into a city-state. Its strategic location at the head of the Adriatic Sea gave Venice undeniable naval and economic advantages. The city became a thriving center of trade between Western Europe and the rest of the world (especially the Byzantine Empire and the Islamic world).

During the 20th century, the extraction of water from aquifers caused Venice to gradually sink. The sinking process has slowed considerably since drilling was banned in the 1960s. However, the city is still threatened by frequent low-level floods (known as Acqua alta, "high water") that raise the water level by a few centimeters above the city's docks, often caused by tides. Studies indicate that the city continues to sink at a relatively slow rate of 1222 mm per year.
From September to November, Venice is quieter, as there are fewer tourists.
Besides its intricate network of canals, Venice boasts numerous ancient and magnificent palaces and squares. In addition, visitors can explore famous landmarks such as the Basilica di San Marco, the Venezia fortress, and the Rialto, Accademia, and Scalzi bridges.

Venice is visited year-round. While the weather is pleasant from June to August, it's not ideal for sightseeing, as traditional gondola tours are often overcrowded and hotel prices are high.

From September to November, Venice is quieter, with fewer tourists, allowing you to explore the city at your leisure. However, for stunning photos in Venice, you should visit between March and May, as spring in Venice is truly magnificent.

Clearly, Venice is a place of unique character, being the only city in Europe in the mid-21st century that does not use cars or trucks as a means of transportation. A city with a long history, yet one that could face the end of the world tomorrow. A city hidden beneath the romance and serenity of its gentle facade.
