Heavy rains caused severe flooding in several areas, forcing residents in some towns to evacuate and more than 50 schools to close on February 10. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology also issued warnings yesterday of heavy rain, strong winds, and flooding.
A car was swept away by floodwaters on a bridge over the Nepean River in the town of Cobbitty, Australia, on February 10.
"However, heavy rains have helped extinguish more than 30 fires since February 7th, which is the most positive news we've had in a while," the NSW Rural Fire Service shared on Twitter on February 10th.
According to the NSW Rural Fire Service, heavy rain helped extinguish the Currowan fire on February 8th. This difficult-to-contain blaze had burned nearly 500 hectares over the past 74 days before being brought under control by the rain. Morris also believes this heavy rain will help extinguish five more difficult-to-control fires across the country.

Heavy rains bring joy to Australians and many animals, but also cause severe flooding.
The Australian bushfires, which erupted last September, have so far killed 33 people and approximately one billion native animals. The fires have destroyed around 2,500 homes and burned more than 11.7 million hectares of land. Australian authorities have been working to combat the bushfire crisis with assistance from several countries, including the United States, Canada, and New Zealand.
