Doan Manh, founder and director of Combo Home design company, has 8 years of experience in residential and resort design and construction. He also spent nearly 10 years traveling and experiencing.
Sharing with Travellive about AnNam Art, architect Doan Manh said: “An ancient house still retains the beauty of the color of time with personalized architecture. The owner is a painter for many years, although renovating the house, he still respects the old traditions combined with materials suitable for the architecture and named it AnNam Art”.
AnNam Art is an art homestay located in the heart of the capital.
Located at No. 10, Lane 3B Dang Thai Than, Hanoi, the house with the main yellow tone has an area of nearly 50 m22There is a living room on the first floor and four bedrooms above, accessed by a wooden staircase corridor on the side of the house, keeping the space neat and tidy.
Room types will include: twin rooms, double rooms and two double rooms, the largest room has a kitchen area. When renovating, the bedrooms are divided from the second to the fifth floor, the rough parts, electricity and water are rearranged to make the function reasonable. AnNam Art has gone through two generations but still exudes sophistication, tinged with time such as doors, wooden floors, iron railings to keep the house safe and to cast shadows when the sun shines down.

Doan Manh added that, in order to respect the original architecture and want to bring old materials but still create a new space, the wooden floor is kept original, combined with pine wood for shelves and cabinets to decorate to make the house more cozy. In addition, he bought clay paint - a mixture of finely ground clay combined with additives from Lam Dong to paint on the walls. The special thing is when using old materials for the new space, tables and chairs are purchased from an old warehouse in Hoi An or old box sofas are re-varnished with simpler colors than ever. The bathroom and kitchen tiles use hand-fired ceramic tiles from Bat Trang.

The house seems to be lived in by collecting memories through wooden furniture, ceramics, and books collected over the years displayed on shelves.
The prints by artist Bui Trong Du are hung from the living room to the hallway and then to the bedrooms, combined with yellow lights that bring a resort-like atmosphere, enhancing the experience more than ever every time you step into the house.
Pottery, handicrafts and home toys are all creative creations that are rarely sold, some of which are made by the same artisan. The table top is made of tiles from Phu Lang Bac Ninh craft village combined with wood from Hoi An, the house is like a combination of many things but the materials are very compatible with each other.
The homeowner is a long-time painter who renovated the house but still respected the old traditions.

“The owner is an artist so he uses very beautiful and harmonious colors, a wide frontage, and a separate space that is not shared with other houses. In addition, the shape of the house is designed culturally, with the color of time from the windows and wooden floors. The house is very suitable for the homestay rental model and cultural experiences, feeling the color of time when looking down from above to the roof of the neighbor's house next door,” said Doan Manh.
In addition, the color of time at AnNam Art is an important factor because it cannot replace the shiny modern things like today. The memories and spirit of a house are things that cannot be bought.

Beauty tinged with time AnNam Art
According to Mr. Doan Manh, there are many homestays in Hanoi, but AnNam Art's style is probably the only one, because the owner has a very unique personality. In the heart of the capital, there is a house that still has the breath, materials, and interior that are imbued with Vietnamese culture, not imported from abroad.
“The spirit of an old house and using old materials to recreate the house feels like traveling in the city,” said Mr. Doan Manh.
