The timeless beauty of Vietnam's first hydroelectric power plant.

During the peak of the nationwide struggle against foreign invaders, the people suffered greatly. At night, only the flickering light of oil lamps illuminated the streets. At a time when society was still underdeveloped and electricity was a foreign concept, Da Lat had been lit up since 1946.

Nestled deep within the Dan Kia - Suoi Vang valley in Lam Dong province, the Ankroet hydroelectric power plant is surrounded by pine forests. This structure, built primarily of quarried stone, is surrounded by lush greenery. It sits peacefully, isolated from the bustling life of the surrounding population. To enter the plant, visitors must cross a small bridge over the water channel used for its operation.

Mr. Phuc, the hydroelectric plant manager, said: "The Ankroet hydroelectric plant started construction in October 1942 and was completed in 1945, officially put into operation to generate electricity to meet the needs of Da Lat when the French wanted to build it into the capital of Indochina."

The architecture of the Ankroet hydroelectric power plant bears the distinctive mark of southwestern France, harmoniously blending natural beauty with the sophistication of 20th-century factory architecture. Seen from afar, this structure stands out like a giant villa nestled amidst a vast expanse of green pine trees.

Besides exploring the unique details inside the factory, visitors also have the opportunity to admire two antique turbine units, originally manufactured by ALSTHOM (France) when the factory was first built, along with an old villa, as beautiful pieces of history in their exploration journey.

Overall, the building looks more like a resort villa than a factory.

This area not only retains its pristine natural beauty but also captivates with its irresistible charm. Waterfalls cascade down from the upstream, flowing through layers of rock before plunging directly into a large lake, creating a stunning turquoise body of water amidst a pine forest. Stepping foot here, visitors will feel as if they are immersed in a majestic symphony of nature, enjoying the breathtaking scenery of the Central Highlands mountains and forests.

Through many ups and downs and historical changes, the power generators manufactured by the US and France have successively completed their missions. To build the hydroelectric power plant in a context of a shortage of modern machinery, thousands of workers from all over the country gathered here, along with experts, dedicating themselves tirelessly to ensuring a future energy supply. The harsh and unfamiliar work in a deprived environment, coupled with the lack of medicine for medical treatment, led to the sacrifice of many before the project was completed. To remember and honor those who poured their hearts and souls into building this monumental project, the next generation of the plant has erected a memorial here, in a tranquil setting, to commemorate their contributions and offer some solace to the souls of those who have passed away.

In 2004, the Ankroet hydroelectric power plant was recognized by the Vietnam Book of Records as the first hydroelectric power plant in Vietnam. However, this is not just an achievement for Vietnam, but also a source of pride for the entire Indochina region. Although not officially designated as a tourist destination, thousands of visitors come here annually to learn about the plant. Furthermore, the ecological environment here is also a highlight, with its picturesque scenery and connection to nature, attracting many tourists who choose to go on excursions here. With its unique beauty, the Ankroet dam has become a popular location for couples to take wedding photos in Da Lat.

With its mission accomplished, the Ankroet hydroelectric power plant has entered a new chapter, becoming a tourism ambassador contributing to the unique beauty of Da Lat, attracting visitors from all over to explore and learn about Vietnam's oldest hydroelectric power plant.
