The town of Pal in Thailand is famous for its "lazy river" activity, where visitors sit on inflatable rafts on the Pai River, which is usually held from November to May of the following year when the water level is low.
According to the Bangkok Post, this activity primarily attracts foreign tourists, especially European visitors who enjoy being close to nature. In the first half of 2024, the small town in Mae Hong Soon province, northern Thailand, welcomed over 40,000 foreign tourists. However, this has also led to some negative impacts on the lives of local residents due to inappropriate behavior by tourists visiting the area.
The "lazy river" ride in Thailand attracts foreign tourists.
After enjoying the "lazy river" activity, many foreign tourists continue to walk around town in their swimsuits. This behavior has caused great outrage among locals, who consider it offensive and disrespectful to local culture. Most recently, police have even received reports of tourists sneaking into resorts to engage in promiscuous sexual activity, causing widespread public concern.
After the game, tourists dressed inappropriately when visiting the area.
To address these issues, the Mae Hong Soon government quickly implemented tourism management measures in Pai, particularly regarding the activity of floating on the river for foreign tourists. Other measures were also proposed, such as a complete ban on alcoholic beverages during river activities and a dress code for tourists to ensure respect for local culture. The goal was to prevent the recurrence of uncivilized behavior that negatively impacted the town's image.
Measures are being proposed to prevent such irresponsible behavior.
In the coming period, the local authorities will strive to implement measures to prevent such problems from occurring, ensuring a better quality of life for local residents and building an image of a civilized and courteous tourist destination.
