Why do Vietnamese people travel to Thailand so frequently?

Thailand has long been a familiar destination for Vietnamese people, with an ever-increasing number of tourists. Many people say they go to Thailand "as often as they eat" because of its convenience, reasonable costs, and the exciting experiences it offers.

Tourism plays a key role as a driving force for the Thai economy, creating a large number of jobs and making a significant contribution to the country's overall development. Recognizing this importance, the Thai government has always given special attention to the tourism industry, regularly implementing policies aimed at its effective recovery and development.

According to data from the World Population Review (WPR), in 2023, Thailand ranked among the top 8 most popular tourist destinations in the world. Furthermore, the number of international visitors to Thailand in the first five months of 2024 reached 14 million, an increase of nearly 40% compared to the same period the previous year.

In 2023, Thailand recorded an impressive increase in Vietnamese tourists, surpassing 1 million. This figure marks a strong recovery of Thailand's tourism industry after the Covid-19 pandemic. Furthermore, Thailand continued to attract Vietnamese tourists in the first three months of 2024 with 209,326 visitors.

Statistics from Booking show that during the recent April 30th and May 1st holiday, Bangkok was the most popular overseas destination for Vietnamese tourists. Along with Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket were also popular choices for Vietnamese travelers during their extended holiday.

According to the report "Vietnamese Tourists' Overseas Travel Trends - Summer 2024" published by The Outbox Company, the demand for overseas travel among Vietnamese tourists this summer remains very high. Specifically, 79.7% of Vietnamese tourists plan to travel abroad within the next 12 months, and 22.2% of them have already booked their trips. Thailand continues to be a favorite destination for Vietnamese tourists, alongside traditional destinations such as South Korea, Japan, and Singapore.

Instead of domestic travel, many young Vietnamese people now consider Thailand a fresh and exciting option for their summer vacation. This is because the cost of a trip to Thailand, including airfare, hotels, and food, is relatively cheaper than domestic travel, especially given the current high airfare prices. Traveling to Thailand is also becoming easier with many direct flights and competitive prices. Furthermore, a trip to Thailand offers the opportunity to explore new cultures, enjoy unique cuisine, and participate in exciting recreational activities.

“Our 5-day, 4-night Thailand tour currently costs between 6,690,000 and 7,990,000 VND per adult, depending on the month. The all-inclusive package covers round-trip airfare, meals, transportation, and a tour guide…”, said Truc Mai (a tour organizer).

Explaining the reasons for the increasing number of Vietnamese tourists visiting Thailand, Truc Mai believes it is due to diverse flight routes, cheap airfares, numerous entertainment venues, subsidized tour packages resulting in low all-inclusive prices, and especially the frequent promotional campaigns organized to attract tourists in the Vietnamese market.
