The purpose of this extension is to attract more tourists from these two important markets, helping to boost Thailand's tourism industry, which has been struggling due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Thailand implemented a visa-free program for tourists from India and Taiwan (China) for the first time in November 2023, which expired on May 4th. Under this policy, tourists from India and Taiwan (China) could stay for up to 30 days in Thailand at a time without a visa.

Under the new policy, tourists from India and Taiwan can stay in Thailand for up to 30 days at a time without needing a visa. To qualify for this policy, applicants must meet conditions such as having a passport valid for at least six months, demonstrating sufficient financial means to cover living expenses during their stay in Thailand, and possessing a return flight ticket or onward flight ticket to another country.
Thailand has eased visa regulations for tourists from several key markets, including China and Russia. According to the Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sports, in the first four months of this year, the country welcomed over 12 million international visitors, a 39% increase compared to the same period last year. The largest groups of tourists came from China, Malaysia, Russia, South Korea, and India, accounting for half of the total number of visitors to Thailand in the first four months. Prime Minister Srettha's government aims to attract 80 million tourists by 2027, double the record 41 million visitors recorded in 2019 before the pandemic.
